A 2026 community service program by Jumahir, Arya, and Vicha
Nur Aini from Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk significantly improved children’s
interest and ability in reading the Qur’an in Lalong Village. The initiative
addresses a critical issue, as low learning motivation and limited tajweed
skills remain common challenges in rural areas.
Mastering tajweed is essential for accurate Qur’an
recitation and the development of children’s religious character. However, many
children in Lalong Village were still at the early stages of reading Iqro and
had not yet achieved fluency. Initial observations showed that about 65% of
children were still beginners, while around 40% demonstrated low learning
interest. These challenges were linked to limited teaching methods, lack of
parental support, and restricted access to religious education facilities.
The program involved 15 children with varying skill levels
and applied a structured yet simple mentoring approach. Activities began with
identifying each child’s reading ability, followed by grouping them based on
competence. Learning sessions included guided practice, repetition, direct
correction, and interactive, enjoyable teaching methods designed to build
confidence and motivation.
The results show significant improvements in both learning
interest and reading ability:
- Attendance became more consistent and stable
- Participation increased, with children actively volunteering to read
- Confidence improved, reducing fear of making mistakes
- Focus and enthusiasm during learning sessions increased
Children also demonstrated better reading fluency and fewer
pronunciation errors. The grouping strategy proved effective in creating a more
supportive and adaptive learning environment tailored to individual needs.
Jumahir from Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk explains that a
human-centered and interactive mentoring approach was key to the program’s
success. Children not only improved their reading skills but also developed
confidence and motivation through positive learning experiences.
The impact extends beyond students. Teachers benefited from
improved classroom management, especially in handling mixed-ability groups. The
program also encouraged greater involvement from parents and the community in
supporting children’s Qur’an reading habits at home.
In the long term, this initiative offers a practical model
for tajweed education in rural settings. However, its sustainability depends on
continued support from families, schools, and the wider community. Ongoing
guidance and reinforcement at home are essential to ensure lasting impact.
