FORMOSA NEWS - Bali - Empowering Coastal Culinary MSMEs: Digitalization and Financial Literacy Boost Business Growth in Bali. In 2026, a team of researchers from Universitas Warmadewa successfully conducted a community service program aimed at strengthening the managerial and digital capacity of culinary Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the coastal tourism area of Pantai Lebih, Gianyar Regency. Led by Ni Made Santini alongside members Made Pratiwi Dewi, Ni Made Tamansari, and Gede Sanjaya Adi Putra, the initiative tackled critical operational challenges faced by local food businesses. By integrating digital financial recording, social media marketing, and standardized operating procedures, the program delivered remarkable economic improvements, helping traditional food vendors enhance their competitiveness in Indonesia's growing digital economy.

Background and Context

MSMEs play a strategic role in supporting local economies, particularly in coastal tourism regions like Pantai Lebih, which functions as a prominent culinary center for fishery products. While traditional food stalls in the area enjoy loyal customers and high product quality, they frequently struggle with modern management practices. Prior observations revealed that businesses like Warung Lesehan Yani, Warung Landung, Warung Tepi Lebih, and Warung Man Lebah lacked structured transaction recording systems. Without proper bookkeeping, owners found it difficult to track revenue, operating costs, profits, and cash flow, which ultimately hindered strategic business planning and sustainable growth. Furthermore, marketing efforts remained largely conventional, relying heavily on walk-in customers while missing out on broader digital opportunities.

Simple Methodology and Approach
To address these hurdles, the Universitas Warmadewa team implemented a participatory action approach involving five structured stages: socialisation, training, technology implementation, intensive mentoring and evaluation, and program sustainability.

  • Socialisation & Training: The researchers engaged directly with business owners to identify operational needs, followed by hands-on training sessions focused on financial literacy and digital tools.
  • Technology Implementation: Participants were introduced to practical digital solutions, including the LUNA POS digital cashier application for electronic sales recording and simple Excel-based financial templates.
  • Digital Marketing & Operations: Business owners received guidance on setting up professional profiles on Instagram and TikTok, as well as integrating online food delivery platforms like GrabFood and GoFood. Additionally, the team developed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) covering equipment hygiene, kitchen organization, and customer service.
Key Findings and Economic Impact
The implementation of digital tools and structured management training yielded immediate, measurable results for the Pantai Lebih Culinary MSME Group. Program evaluations demonstrated significant economic progress across participating businesses:
  • Asset Growth: Total business assets increased from IDR 46 million prior to the program to IDR 52.5 million afterward, marking a 14% expansion.
  • Sales Turnover: Average monthly sales turnover experienced a sharp surge from IDR 37 million to IDR 45.3 million, representing a 22% increase.
  • Operational Efficiency: Partners successfully adopted electronic transaction logging, separated personal and business finances, and established consistent cleaning and service workflows.
Real-World Implications and Future Outlook
The success of this community service initiative highlights how accessible technological interventions can transform traditional local economies. By bridging the gap between traditional food services and modern digital tools, the program directly supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. The findings demonstrate that simple technological adoption can expand market reach, improve administrative transparency, and foster long-term business resilience. Continued university support and periodic mentoring remain essential to ensure that these digital habits become permanent fixtures of daily business operations. With ongoing guidance, these local enterprises are well-positioned to maintain sustainable, professional growth.
