Implementing legal education and good governance principles effectively minimizes the risk of legal disputes and abuse of authority within community organizations. This finding was revealed by legal scholar Marisa Kurnianingsih, S.H., M.H., from the Faculty of Law at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) in a community service research study published in the Indonesian Journal of Society Development in June 2026. The study evaluates the impact of interactive legal counseling on enhancing members' understanding of institutional governance, transparency, and internal conflict prevention mechanisms. The results highlight the necessity of continuous legal education as a preventive strategy to build professional and high-integrity organizations.
As social and institutional dynamics become increasingly complex, community organizations frequently face various legal challenges. The primary obstacles triggering internal conflicts or regulatory violations often stem from a lack of legal literacy among administrators and suboptimal implementation of transparent governance practices. Potential risks—such as conflicts of interest, abuse of power, internal rule violations, data breaches, and cybercrime—frequently threaten organizational sustainability. Relying solely on reactive measures after legal disputes arise is costly and resource-intensive, making a preventive, educational approach far more practical.
This research utilized a descriptive qualitative approach combined with a participatory community service framework. The study involved members and leaders of religious organizations and managers of Muhammadiyah Charitable Ventures (AUM) as primary subjects. Data were gathered through field observations, in-depth interviews regarding governance challenges, and documentation of educational sessions. The educational intervention consisted of legal lectures, interactive discussions, and presentations covering legal concepts, dispute types, and key indicators of good governance. Participant comprehension was evaluated qualitatively by comparing knowledge levels before and after the interactive sessions.
Based on qualitative data analysis and program evaluation, the study yielded four key findings:
- Enhanced Legal Literacy: Participants gained a clear understanding of legal issues as discrepancies between applicable legal norms and societal practices, enabling them to identify potential disputes early.
- Understanding Good Governance: Cadres developed a deeper appreciation for integrating the five core principles of good governance—transparency, accountability, participation, effectiveness, and the rule of law—into organizational decision-making.
- Identification of Organizational Risks: Participants learned to recognize various forms of internal violations (such as abuse of authority and rule manipulation) as well as external risks (such as breach of contract and cybercrime).
- Cultivation of Compliance Culture: Interactive educational sessions successfully fostered a shared commitment to establishing internal control systems and maintaining a law-abiding organizational culture.
The implications of this research are highly relevant for strengthening the governance of non-profit organizations, social institutions, and business entities. Upholding transparency and accountability prevents fraud and power abuse while significantly increasing public trust. From a public policy and legal perspective, this preventive approach demonstrates that the law functions effectively as an instrument of social engineering to shape law-abiding behavior. Marisa Kurnianingsih from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta emphasizes that continuous legal training represents a strategic investment in developing professional, responsive, and legally sound organizational leadership.
