Marketing Strategy Becomes Increasingly Important for Indonesian MSMEs
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) remain one of Indonesia's strongest economic pillars, contributing significantly to employment creation and regional economic development. At the same time, competition in the culinary industry has become increasingly intense as consumer expectations continue to evolve. Customers now evaluate businesses based not only on taste but also on product quality, presentation, affordability, accessibility, and customer service.
East Lampung represents a promising market for culinary businesses. According to the study, the regency has a population exceeding one million people and more than 110,000 micro and small enterprises. This large market creates substantial business opportunities while simultaneously increasing competitive pressure among local food businesses. The authors note that marketing strategies have become essential for MSMEs seeking sustainable growth in such an environment.
The researchers selected Yonna Cake Shop as a case study because previous studies had rarely examined the practical implementation of the 4P marketing mix in bakery businesses within East Lampung. The study therefore provides new insights into how a traditional marketing framework can support sales growth in local culinary enterprises.
Simple Research Design Focused on Real Business Practice
The research employed a qualitative case study approach to obtain an in-depth understanding of the company's marketing practices. The primary source of information was the business owner, selected through purposive sampling, while field observations and business documentation were used to validate the interview findings.
Rather than relying on statistical modelling, the researchers analyzed interview results, observations, and supporting documents using the interactive analytical framework developed by Miles and Huberman, allowing them to identify consistent marketing patterns implemented by the company. Data credibility was strengthened through triangulation and participant verification.
Four Marketing Elements Work Together
The study found that Yonna Cake Shop successfully integrates all four components of the marketing mix.
Product
Product quality serves as the foundation of the business strategy. The bakery emphasizes consistent taste, attractive product presentation, premium ingredients, and a wide variety of products, including birthday cakes, brownies, cupcakes, dessert boxes, bread, hampers, and customized orders for weddings, birthdays, and other special occasions. Maintaining product quality encourages repeat purchases and strengthens customer loyalty.
Price
Pricing is carefully adjusted according to production costs, product complexity, market conditions, and customer purchasing power. Instead of targeting only premium consumers, the bakery offers products for multiple market segments, from students to families. The researchers also found that the business follows market trends without automatically increasing prices, helping maintain affordability while preserving product quality.
Place
The company's location strategy evolved alongside business growth. During its first three years, production and sales operated entirely from the founders' home. After building a stable customer base, approximately 80 percent of whom were located in Sukadana, the owners opened a physical store in the district to improve accessibility and strengthen consumer trust. The new location made purchasing and order collection significantly more convenient for customers.
Promotion
Digital marketing plays a central role in the company's promotional activities. Yonna Cake Shop actively uses WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to showcase products, communicate with customers, and expand market reach.
The research also emphasizes that promotion extends beyond social media. Consistent product quality, responsive customer service, and openness to customer feedback contribute to positive word-of-mouth recommendations, reinforcing customer loyalty and attracting new buyers.
Daily Revenue Increased to Approximately Rp3.5 Million
The integrated marketing strategy produced measurable business growth.
According to interviews with the business owner, the bakery's average daily revenue increased steadily:
- Initial business period (2020): hundreds of thousands of rupiah per day.
- After opening the physical store: approximately Rp2 million per day.
- Following year: approximately Rp2.5 million per day.
- Subsequent year: approximately Rp3 million per day.
- During the 2026 study period: approximately Rp3.5 million per day.
Business expansion was reflected not only in higher sales but also in the growing customer base, increased order volume, the transition from a home-based operation to a permanent retail store, and workforce expansion from two founders to ten employees. The researchers conclude that these developments demonstrate the positive contribution of an integrated marketing mix to sales performance and business sustainability.
Practical Implications for Culinary MSMEs
The findings suggest that successful marketing for MSMEs depends on balancing all four elements of the marketing mix rather than focusing exclusively on advertising.
Businesses can improve competitiveness by maintaining consistent product quality, setting prices that reflect customer purchasing power, choosing accessible business locations, and actively engaging consumers through digital platforms while delivering excellent customer service.
As the authors from Nahdlatul Ulama University of Lampung explain, the integrated implementation of Product, Price, Place, and Promotion supported continuous sales growth, customer retention, and business expansion at Yonna Cake Shop. Their findings indicate that the 4P marketing mix remains a practical and effective strategic framework for culinary MSMEs operating in increasingly competitive markets.
