Digital Innovation for a Persistent Waste Challenge
Plastic waste remains one of the world's fastest-growing environmental problems. Universities have increasingly adopted sustainability programs, yet encouraging individuals to consistently separate, recycle, and reduce waste continues to be difficult.
Universitas Lampung has implemented the Green Campus concept for nearly two decades through environmental policies, an Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST), ISO 14001 environmental management standards, and participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. Despite these achievements, the university's performance in inorganic waste management has remained relatively low, highlighting the need for more effective behavioral interventions.
Recognizing this challenge, the research team developed tigaR, a digital waste management platform that combines environmental education, recycling activities, and incentive mechanisms based on a Deposit-Return System (DRS). The application encourages users to reduce disposable plastic consumption, use reusable tumblers, and deposit recyclable plastic waste through a structured digital platform.
A Mixed-Methods Evaluation
The researchers evaluated the application using a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data.
The study involved approximately 100 participants from the academic community of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Lampung. Data were collected through online surveys, interviews, usability testing, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). This approach enabled the researchers to examine not only how well the application functioned technically but also how it influenced users' environmental attitudes and everyday behavior.
The tigaR platform was designed with a simple user interface featuring:
- User registration and account management

- Information on campus waste collection points

- Educational information about waste sorting
- A web-based dashboard for administrators and waste management monitoring
Key Findings
The study found several encouraging outcomes following the implementation of the tigaR application.
Most participants already had strong digital readiness. Nearly all respondents owned smartphones and had regular internet access, making mobile-based environmental campaigns highly feasible within the university community.
Environmental awareness improved after using the application. Participants reported that the application motivated them to pay greater attention to campus cleanliness, identify appropriate waste disposal locations, and better understand waste separation practices.
Reusable tumbler adoption increased. The reuse campaign successfully encouraged participants to reduce dependence on single-use plastic bottles by incorporating reusable drink containers into their daily routines. According to the study's conclusions, approximately 67% of respondents developed new habits of using reusable drinking containers during the implementation period.
The recycling feature demonstrated operational success. During a two-week implementation period, participants deposited approximately 35 kilograms of plastic waste, confirming that the application successfully recorded recycling transactions and synchronized them with the platform's online database. However, only 13 of the 100 participants actively deposited recyclable plastic, indicating that long-term participation remains a challenge.
Challenges Beyond Technology
Although users generally viewed the application positively, the researchers identified several barriers that technology alone cannot solve.
Some participants reported feeling uncomfortable carrying recyclable waste from home to campus collection points. Others preferred storing plastic waste until larger quantities accumulated before transporting it for recycling. Limited financial incentives also reduced participation, as recyclable plastic was valued at approximately IDR 800 per kilogram during the study.
These findings indicate that digital platforms are most effective when supported by convenient collection infrastructure, attractive incentives, and sustained environmental campaigns that reinforce new habits over time.
Supporting Sustainable Universities
The researchers believe the tigaR platform demonstrates how digital innovation can strengthen sustainability programs within higher education institutions.
Beyond recording recycling transactions, the application serves as a behavioral engineering tool by integrating education, environmental responsibility, and reward mechanisms into everyday campus activities. The study suggests that similar digital platforms could help universities improve waste management performance while supporting sustainability indicators used by international rankings such as UI GreenMetric.
As Arif Sugiono and colleagues from Universitas Lampung conclude, the tigaR platform functions not only as a digital waste management application but also as a practical mechanism for encouraging environmentally responsible behavior through daily participation and technology-assisted habit formation.
