Work From Home Proven to Boost Employee Productivity Despite Communication and Discipline Challenges

The Work From Home (WFH) system has proven to have a significant positive impact on employee performance in the current digital era. A 2026 study conducted by Feriandy from Mitra Bangsa University reveals that work flexibility boosts time efficiency, comfort, and the balance between personal life and work. These findings are crucial for modern organizations in designing adaptive human resource management strategies amidst shifting global work patterns.

Context of Shifting Work Patterns

Digital technology advancements have transformed work paradigms from those based on physical presence to those based on results and efficiency. WFH is no longer merely an emergency option but has become part of organizational strategy and national policy in Indonesia to increase productivity and energy efficiency. However, this system also presents new challenges, such as the risk of declining communication effectiveness, limited social interaction, and difficulties in maintaining work discipline due to the lack of direct supervision from superiors.

Methodology

This study employed a quantitative approach with an associative design involving 100 employees who have implemented the WFH system. Data were collected through questionnaires that measured WFH effectiveness and employee performance variables, then analyzed using statistical techniques to determine the relationships and the magnitude of the impact of variables within a remote working environment.

Key Findings

  • Analysis of the data shows that WFH has a positive and significant influence on employee performance, with the following highlights:
  •  Performance Improvement: Every one-unit increase in WFH implementation contributes to a 0.678-unit increase in employee performance.
  • Efficiency and Satisfaction: The majority of employees experienced time efficiency by eliminating commutes and enjoyed better work flexibility.
  • Maintained Productivity: Employees demonstrated high responsibility and stable work quality while working from home.
  • Collaboration Challenges: There was a decline in communication effectiveness and teamwork compared to working directly in the office.

Implications for Organizational Management

Feriandy from Mitra Bangsa University emphasizes that although WFH is highly effective, its success depends heavily on the active role of Human Resource Management (HRM). Organizations need to develop adaptive policies, provide adequate technological support, and improve employee digital competencies. Implementing a hybrid system is suggested as a strategic solution to maintain social interaction and team coordination while allowing employees the flexibility to work remotely. This approach is believed to create a work environment that is not only efficient but also sustainable for the future of companies.
