At-Thayibah Kindergarten Teachers Improve Children's Learning Concentration Through Play and Singing

The ability of young children to concentrate has become an important concern in the education sector. Recent research conducted by Sri Ayu Laali along with Sri Rindiani H. Saudo, Sri Melani A. Djamir, and Sri Junita from Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk found that learning strategies based on play activities can help kindergarten children stay more focused during class. The findings were published in the International Journal of Advanced Technology and Social Sciences (IJATSS) in 2026. The research was conducted at At-Thayibah Kindergarten to examine how teachers handle concentration problems among early childhood students. The study found that many children still become easily distracted during learning activities. Some children lose focus because they talk with friends, play by themselves in class, or pay more attention to surrounding activities. As a result, they struggle to understand teacher instructions and complete assignments properly. According to Sri Ayu Laali and the research team, this condition is a natural characteristic of early childhood development. Kindergarten children tend to be active, easily bored, and have shorter attention spans. Because of this, monotonous teaching methods are considered less effective for young learners. Teachers are encouraged to create enjoyable learning environments that keep children interested and engaged throughout the lesson.

The researchers used a qualitative descriptive method in this study. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with teachers and school principals, and learning activity documentation. This approach allowed the researchers to gain a deeper understanding of the strategies teachers use to improve children’s learning concentration. The findings revealed that teachers at At-Thayibah Kindergarten apply several creative strategies to help children maintain focus during learning activities. These strategies include:
-singing activities,
-learning through play,
-the use of educational toys,
-sensorimotor activities,
-and role-playing exercises.

Among these approaches, learning through play was considered the most effective because it matches the developmental characteristics of early childhood learners. Children became more active, enthusiastic, and able to maintain attention longer during classroom activities. The study also highlighted the importance of sensorimotor activities in improving children’s concentration. Sensorimotor learning combines body movement with sensory experiences such as seeing, hearing, touching, and moving actively. According to the researchers, this method allows children to learn naturally without feeling pressured by formal lessons. Children become more comfortable and focused because learning is presented in the form of enjoyable play activities. In addition, role-playing activities were found to effectively train children’s attention control and self-management skills. When children participate in role-playing games, they learn to follow rules, understand instructions, and complete tasks according to the flow of the activity. These experiences indirectly improve concentration and social interaction skills. Sri Ayu Laali and her colleagues explained that successful learning in early childhood education is strongly influenced by teachers’ creativity in selecting learning strategies. Teachers are not only instructors but also facilitators who create active and enjoyable learning environments. When teaching methods are engaging, children can understand lessons more easily and are less likely to lose focus.

This research is important because concentration problems in young children are often underestimated. In fact, concentration is a fundamental skill that supports cognitive development and future academic success. Children who can focus well are generally better at understanding instructions, absorbing information, and completing learning tasks. The findings also provide important insights for early childhood education institutions in Indonesia. Schools and teachers are encouraged to reduce overly formal and monotonous learning methods for kindergarten students. Instead, learning activities based on games, songs, movement, and social interaction are considered more effective for supporting children’s overall development. For parents, the study offers practical guidance for supporting children’s learning at home. Simple activities such as singing together, role-playing, building blocks, or motor skill games can naturally help improve children’s concentration. Fun learning approaches are also considered effective in reducing learning pressure among young children. Sri Ayu Laali and the research team emphasized that every child has a different learning style. Therefore, teachers need to be flexible and sensitive to the needs of each student. Children who experience concentration difficulties require additional support through creative, interactive, and developmentally appropriate learning approaches. The study reinforces the idea that early childhood education should not focus solely on reading and writing skills. It should also prioritize the development of essential abilities such as attention, self-control, social interaction, and learning readiness. With appropriate strategies, children’s concentration skills can develop optimally from an early age.
