Jakarta — A 2026 study by Teuku Muhammad Fauzan Robbani from Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta reveals that Surah Ar-Rahman verses 10–33 present a framework describing a balanced relationship between humans and the universe that emphasizes ecological responsibility. The research, based on Tantawi Jauhari’s Tafsir Al-Jawahir, shows that the Qur’an offers not only spiritual guidance but also a scientific perspective on environmental balance relevant to modern sustainability challenges.
Environmental degradation and climate change are increasingly urgent global concerns. In this context, religious interpretations that emphasize harmony between humans and nature provide an important ethical foundation for environmental awareness. Tafsir Al-Jawahir represents a significant contribution because it integrates Qur’anic interpretation with scientific observation.
The study explains how Tantawi Jauhari understood nature as part of an interconnected life system linked directly to human existence. Nature is described as a trust that must be preserved rather than exploited without limits. This perspective supports the idea that environmental crises are closely related to declining ethical awareness in human interaction with the natural world.
The research applied a qualitative descriptive approach through library analysis of Tafsir Al-Jawahir and related scholarly literature. The interpretation focused on Surah Ar-Rahman verses 10–33, which describe the creation of the earth, cosmic balance, and human responsibility as stewards of the environment.
The findings show that the relationship between humans and nature in Tafsir Al-Jawahir is reciprocal and interdependent. Nature supports human life, while humans are responsible for maintaining the balance established within the structure of the universe.
The concept of mizan, or balance, in Surah Ar-Rahman is interpreted as a universal principle that humans must respect. Violating this balance may lead to ecological disruption that ultimately affects human survival.
The study also highlights that humans are created from elements of the earth, reinforcing the understanding that environmental damage directly threatens human existence. This interpretation demonstrates the connection between spiritual awareness and scientific insight in understanding the human role in nature.
In addition, Tafsir Al-Jawahir interprets verses describing the ability to explore the heavens and the earth as encouragement for scientific and technological advancement. Scientific knowledge is presented as an essential tool for fulfilling humanity’s responsibility as stewards of the planet.
Natural phenomena such as the meeting of two seas are also interpreted as invitations for scientific investigation. In this context, fields such as oceanography, astronomy, and biology become part of humanity’s expression of gratitude for natural resources.
According to Teuku Muhammad Fauzan Robbani from Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Tafsir Al-Jawahir provides an integrative framework connecting religion and science in addressing contemporary environmental challenges. He emphasized that understanding Qur’anic verses related to nature can strengthen ecological awareness in modern societies.
The study further explains that Tantawi Jauhari incorporated scientific illustrations and empirical data into his interpretation to make Qur’anic explanations more accessible and relevant to readers. This approach represents an important innovation in modern Qur’anic interpretation by bridging religious texts with scientific developments.
These findings contribute to environmental education, policymaking, and interdisciplinary Qur’anic studies that integrate theology and science. The integration of spiritual values and ecological awareness offers a strong foundation for sustainable environmental management in contemporary societies.
