FORMOSA NEWS - Lampung - Health Education Significantly Improves Community Awareness of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention. The community service activity carried out by Mesya, Aurellia Firstania, and Rendy Yudha Pratama from Aisyah Pringsewu University and Subang State Polytechnicwas reported in a scientific article published in 2026 in the Asian Journal of Community Services.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes coronary heart disease, stroke, and other vascular disorders, continues to pose a serious public health challenge worldwide. Global and national data indicate that many CVD-related deaths are preventable. Major risk factors such as smoking, unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, uncontrolled blood pressure, and high blood sugar are closely linked to lifestyle behaviors. However, in many communities, knowledge about how to prevent and detect cardiovascular disease early remains inadequate.

Cardiovascular Disease Challenges in the Community

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of death globally and in Indonesia. Limited public awareness of risk factors and preventive measures particularly primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention often results in late detection and poor disease management. This situation highlights the importance of accessible health education initiatives at the community level.

Educational Approach and Program Implementation

The community service program was carried out on November 29, 2025, in the service area of Wates Community Health Center, Gading Rejo. A total of 15 community members participated in the activity. The educational sessions were delivered through presentations, printed leaflets, and interactive discussions. To assess the program’s effectiveness, participants completed questionnaires before and after the session to measure changes in their level of knowledge.

Focus of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Education

The educational materials covered three levels of cardiovascular disease prevention. Primary prevention emphasized healthy lifestyle practices, including balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, stress management, and smoking cessation. Secondary prevention highlighted the importance of early detection through routine health screenings, such as blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol checks. Tertiary prevention focused on disease management for individuals who already have cardiovascular conditions, with the aim of preventing complications and improving quality of life.

Impact on Health Awareness and Behavior

Improved knowledge serves as a critical foundation for healthier behavior. With better understanding, community members are more likely to adopt healthy lifestyles, undergo regular health screenings, and manage existing health conditions more effectively. Over time, these changes can help reduce the risk of complications and ease the burden on healthcare services.
