BANDUNG, Formosa News —
The economic independence of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) is no
longer viewed merely as a secondary business activity, but as a tangible
manifestation of internalized religious values. A study conducted by Mulyana
Hidayat from STAI Bhakti Persada Majalaya Bandung reveals that Islamic
Educational Theology serves as the fundamental philosophical foundation driving
sustainable economic empowerment within pesantren.
Published in 2026 in the International Journal of Advanced Technology
and Social Sciences (IJATSS), the study examines the implementation of the One
Pesantren One Product (OPOP) Program at Pagelaran 3 Islamic Boarding School
in Subang Regency, West Java. The findings highlight that the success of
pesantren business enterprises is primarily driven by underlying theological
values that shape work ethics and institutional governance, rather than solely
depending on managerial factors or financial assistance.
Driving Independence Amidst Global Challenges
In an era defined by the knowledge economy and digital transformation,
educational institutions are expected not only to produce academically
competent graduates, but also to generate economic opportunities for the wider
community. Indonesia houses the world's largest network of Islamic boarding
schools, accommodating millions of students. However, many pesantren continue
to face structural constraints, including limited entrepreneurial capacity,
restricted market access, and reliance on external aid.
To address these challenges, the Provincial Government of West Java
introduced the OPOP Program as a strategic policy initiative. The initiative
provides business incubation, managerial training, product development support,
and market expansion for pesantren enterprises. Mulyana Hidayat conducted an
in-depth qualitative case study at Pagelaran 3 Islamic Boarding School—an
institution established in 1962—to examine how public policy interventions
interact with the theological values embedded in pesantren educational culture.
Accessible Case Study Methodology
The research employed a qualitative case study design using
multidimensional data collection techniques. The author gathered qualitative
data through semi-structured interviews with pesantren leaders, cooperative
managers, entrepreneurship program coordinators, and teachers. This was
complemented by participant observation of daily educational and
entrepreneurial activities, alongside documentary analysis of institutional
reports and OPOP program documentation. The collected data were analyzed
iteratively to examine the relationships between religious values and business
practices.
Key Research Findings
Based on the integrated data analysis, the study outlines four main
findings:
- Productive
Work as Worship:
Pesantren view economic and entrepreneurial activities not merely as
material pursuits, but as manifestations of religious devotion and
stewardship (khalifah).
- Internalization
of Religious Values:
Entrepreneurial character is cultivated through core Islamic values such
as trustworthiness (amanah), sincerity (ikhlas), discipline,
and mutual cooperation (ta'awun), which are directly integrated
into cooperative operations.
- OPOP as a
Catalyst for Transformation: The OPOP program effectively enhances management capacity, product
quality, and market competitiveness while preserving the religious
identity of the pesantren.
- Social
Impact and Institutional Autonomy: Enhanced economic capacity reduces dependence on external
financial aid, improves educational facilities, and creates local
employment and supplier partnerships.
Implications for Society, Business, and Public Policy
The study underscores that value-based economic empowerment models yield
significant benefits for sustainable socio-economic development. For local
communities and businesses, resilient pesantren enterprise units foster
inclusive local economic ecosystems. For policymakers, the research suggests
that faith-based empowerment initiatives should be designed to align with the
underlying theological worldview and institutional culture of educational
institutions, rather than treating them strictly as commercial enterprises.
"Entrepreneurial activities within pesantren develop effectively
because they are understood as instruments for fulfilling religious and social
responsibilities, rather than purely commercial pursuits," explains
Mulyana Hidayat in the study.
