Teaching Factory Strengthens Entrepreneurial Mindset and Prepares Job Creators for the Modern Industrial Era

FORMOSA NEWS - MEDAN, Indonesia – Integrating the Teaching Factory (TEFA) model into vocational education significantly strengthens students’ entrepreneurial mindset and increases their readiness to become job creators rather than job seekers, according to research by Retmono Agung Winarno from Politeknik Pembangunan Pertanian (Polbangtan) Medan. Published in the Indonesian Journal of Agriculture and Environmental Analytics (IJAEA) in 2026, the study highlights how industry-based learning can help vocational institutions prepare graduates for a rapidly changing labor market shaped by digital transformation and industrial innovation.

As automation, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies continue to reshape industries, employers increasingly seek graduates with more than technical expertise. Modern economies also require individuals who can identify business opportunities, innovate, and create employment. The findings suggest that Teaching Factory offers an effective educational approach for developing these entrepreneurial competencies while maintaining strong links between vocational education and real industrial practice.

Why Teaching Factory Matters

Vocational education has traditionally focused on preparing students to enter existing jobs. However, economic uncertainty and rapid technological change have shifted attention toward entrepreneurship as an essential graduate competency.

Teaching Factory addresses this challenge by transforming practical learning into experiences that closely resemble actual industrial operations. Instead of limiting learning to classroom theory, students participate directly in production activities, business management, product marketing, and quality control. Through these experiences, they develop technical abilities alongside creativity, innovation, teamwork, responsibility, and decision-making skills that are essential for entrepreneurship.

The study argues that this industry-oriented learning environment helps students understand not only how products are created but also how businesses operate, making vocational education more relevant to current economic needs.

How the Research Was Conducted

The research was carried out at Politeknik Pembangunan Pertanian (Polbangtan) Medan using a descriptive quantitative approach.

The study involved 50 students participating in Teaching Factory activities. Every member of the target population was included as a respondent through total sampling. Researchers collected information using structured questionnaires and analyzed the data through descriptive statistics, instrument validation and reliability testing, and simple linear regression using SPSS Version 25.0.

Rather than relying on theoretical assumptions, the research measured students' perceptions of Teaching Factory implementation and examined whether stronger implementation was associated with a stronger entrepreneurial spirit.

Key Findings

The research found that Teaching Factory implementation received consistently positive evaluations from participating students.

Major findings include:

  • Overall Teaching Factory implementation achieved a high average score of 3.94.
  • The activity objectives component received the highest evaluation with a score of 4.06, indicating that students clearly understood the goals and benefits of the program.
  • Facilities and infrastructure received the lowest score at 3.82, suggesting room for improvement despite remaining within the high category.
  • All questionnaire items met validity requirements.
  • The research instrument demonstrated very high reliability, with a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.815.
  • Statistical analysis showed that Teaching Factory had a significant positive effect on students' entrepreneurial spirit, with a significance value of 0.012 and a regression coefficient of 0.542.

These results indicate that improvements in Teaching Factory implementation are associated with stronger entrepreneurial characteristics among students.

Practical Learning Builds Entrepreneurial Skills

The study describes Teaching Factory at Polbangtan Medan as more than a practical laboratory. Students participate in activities that mirror real business operations, including planning production, managing products, calculating production costs, determining selling prices, evaluating business performance, and marketing products.

According to the article, practical activities account for approximately 60–70 percent of the learning process, giving students substantial exposure to experiential learning. The institution also collaborates with agribusiness companies, government agencies, and other stakeholders, allowing students to experience industrial standards and professional business environments.

Teaching Factory is further supported by the Gerakan Mahasiswa Cinta Pertanian (GMCP) program, which encourages students to develop discipline, independence, responsibility, and long-term commitment to agricultural entrepreneurship beyond formal classroom activities.

The research also notes that students are introduced to digital entrepreneurship through social media marketing and e-commerce platforms, reflecting the growing importance of digital business skills in the modern economy.

Challenges That Still Need Attention

Although the overall results are highly positive, the study identifies several areas requiring further development.

Infrastructure remains the weakest component of the Teaching Factory system. The research also highlights the need for stronger industry experience among lecturers and instructors, broader access to digital marketing opportunities, better business incubation programs, and improved post-graduation support to help students sustain businesses after completing their studies.

Addressing these challenges would strengthen the long-term effectiveness of Teaching Factory as a vocational education model.

Implications for Education and Industry

The findings have important implications for vocational education, policymakers, and industry partners.

For educational institutions, the study demonstrates that integrating industry-based practical learning into academic programs can significantly strengthen entrepreneurial competencies alongside technical skills.

For governments, the research supports continued investment in vocational education through upgraded facilities, stronger partnerships with industry, and business incubation programs that encourage graduate entrepreneurship.

For businesses, collaboration with vocational institutions provides opportunities to develop future entrepreneurs who already possess practical industrial experience and understand modern production systems.
