PowerPoint-Based Learning Media Improves Third-Grade Students’ Fairy Tale Reading Outcomes

FORMOSA NEWS - Berastagi - The use of technology-based PowerPoint learning media significantly improved the learning outcomes of third-grade students at SD Negeri 040527 Tigapanah. This finding was reported by Ernita Sri Bina Br Sitepu, Pelista Br Karo Sekali, and Jainal Togatorop from Universitas Quality Berastagi through research conducted during the 2025/2026 academic year. The results show that presenting learning materials through a combination of text, images, illustrations, and animation can help students understand fairy tale reading materials more effectively.

The study was conducted in response to challenges in elementary school reading instruction. In Grade III at SD Negeri 040527 Tigapanah, learning activities had previously relied heavily on lectures and textbooks. This condition limited student involvement in the learning process and resulted in less optimal learning outcomes.

Initial data showed that 13 of the 23 students, or 56.5%, had not achieved the Minimum Competency Criterion (KKM) of 75. Only 10 students, or 43.5%, had achieved the required level of mastery. The class average was also still relatively low at 63.0.

This situation encouraged the use of more visual and engaging learning media. PowerPoint was selected because it enables teachers to present materials in a more structured way through various elements, including text, images, illustrations, animation, graphics, audio, and video. For elementary school students, this type of visual presentation can help make abstract materials more concrete and easier to understand.

Study Involved 23 Third-Grade Students

The research conducted by Ernita Sri Bina Br Sitepu, Pelista Br Karo Sekali, and Jainal Togatorop used a quantitative approach with an experimental method. All 23 third-grade students at SD Negeri 040527 Tigapanah were involved as the research sample.

The researchers compared students’ learning outcomes before and after the use of PowerPoint media. Before the learning intervention, students completed a pretest to measure their initial abilities. After receiving instruction using PowerPoint-based learning media for fairy tale reading materials, the students completed a posttest.

Data were collected through observation and learning outcome tests. The research instruments were also tested beforehand to ensure their quality. Of the 15 test items examined, 10 were declared valid and used in the research.

The reliability test showed that the pretest instrument had a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.890, while the posttest instrument achieved a value of 0.866. Both values indicate a high level of consistency.

Average Scores Increased from 66 to 82

The improvement in learning outcomes became evident after PowerPoint media was implemented in fairy tale reading lessons.

The statistical analysis also strengthened these findings. The paired samples t-test produced a significance value of 0.000, which was lower than the 0.05 threshold. The calculated t-value of 5.366 was also higher than the t-table value of 2.086.

These results indicate a significant difference between students’ learning outcomes before and after the use of PowerPoint-based learning media.

In other words, students achieved better learning outcomes after participating in learning activities that utilized technology-based presentation media.

Visual Presentation Helps Students Understand Fairy Tales

According to Ernita Sri Bina Br Sitepu and her colleagues from Universitas Quality Berastagi, PowerPoint allows teachers to present fairy tale reading materials in a more engaging and structured manner.

The material is not delivered solely through oral explanations or textbook text. Teachers can use images and illustrations to help students understand characters, plot, setting, and the messages contained in fairy tales. Animation and visual presentation can also help maintain students’ attention throughout the learning process.

The observation results showed that teacher activity reached 82%, placing it in the very good category. This indicates that PowerPoint media can be integrated into learning stages in a planned manner, from the introduction and core activities to the closing and reflection stages.

For elementary school students, a visual approach is also relevant to the characteristics of learning that require concrete examples and engaging presentations. When information is presented through a combination of text and images, students have more opportunities to understand the material being studied.

Simple Technology to Support Learning

The findings show that the use of educational technology does not always require complex devices or applications. PowerPoint, which has long been used in education, can remain an effective learning medium when designed according to learning objectives and students’ characteristics.

Teachers can develop presentations using concise materials, relevant images, appropriate colors, and a systematic presentation flow. In this way, PowerPoint functions not merely as a tool for displaying text but also as a visual medium that supports classroom interaction.

Nevertheless, the use of PowerPoint still requires supporting facilities, such as computers or laptops, projectors, electricity, and teachers’ skills in designing presentation materials. Schools therefore play an important role in providing infrastructure and supporting teachers’ professional development in the use of educational technology.

For elementary schools, these findings can serve as a consideration in developing technology-based learning, particularly for materials that require students to understand texts and stories. PowerPoint can also be combined with reading activities, discussions, question-and-answer sessions, or group activities to increase student engagement.

The researchers recommend that teachers continue developing learning media creatively according to students’ needs and the characteristics of the subject matter. Future studies could examine other technology-based media, apply different learning models, and involve larger numbers of schools and students.
