A study by Ihrof Muzarodin of STIP Jakarta, together with Heru Maryanto, Antaris Fahrisani, and Pierre Marcello Lopulalan of Politeknik Pelayaran Banten, found that digital navigation systems, real-time vessel monitoring, electronic documentation, and integrated logistics data can accelerate maritime operations while strengthening shipping safety. Conducted in February 2026, the study is particularly relevant for Indonesia, an archipelagic country that relies heavily on maritime transportation for logistics distribution, regional connectivity, and economic activity.

The findings were published in an article titled “The Transformation of Digital Technology-Based Maritime Transportation Systems in Enhancing Shipping Efficiency and Safety.” The researchers examined how digital technologies are being applied in maritime operations and how their implementation affects operational efficiency and shipping safety.

Digital Technology Addresses Maritime Transportation Challenges

Maritime transportation faces growing pressure to deliver goods faster, reduce vessel waiting times, improve coordination between stakeholders, and prevent accidents. However, several challenges remain, including distribution delays, fragmented information systems, limited vessel monitoring, and the risk of human error in navigation.

These challenges are particularly important for Indonesia because much of the country's logistics activity depends on ports and shipping routes. When information about vessels, port schedules, documentation, and cargo distribution is managed separately, operations can become slower and more vulnerable to errors.

Muzarodin and his colleagues found that digital technology offers a way to connect different maritime activities more quickly and efficiently. Technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, data analytics, digital navigation, and real-time monitoring are increasingly becoming part of this transformation.

Study Involved 15 Maritime Transportation Stakeholders

The researchers used a qualitative case study approach. They interviewed 15 informants consisting of ship operators, port managers, and maritime authorities.

The interviews were conducted both in person and online in February 2026. The informants were selected because of their direct experience and involvement in maritime operations and the implementation of digital systems.

The information collected was analyzed to identify key patterns related to digital technology implementation, operational efficiency, shipping safety, data integration, and challenges associated with digital transformation.

Digital Navigation Helps Reduce Human Error

One of the study's key findings is that digital navigation systems can improve the accuracy of shipping operations. Information about vessel positions, routes, weather conditions, and operational situations can be updated more quickly.

Before digital systems became widely used, some route monitoring processes were still conducted manually. This could increase the risk of delayed information and navigation errors. Digital systems enable ship operators to access information more quickly and support faster decision-making.

Real-time vessel monitoring also allows engine conditions, vessel positions, and weather situations to be monitored continuously. This information can help operators respond more quickly when potential problems emerge.

The researchers also found that digital technology supports vessel traffic management. Such systems can provide warnings when vessels are approaching potentially dangerous routes or when there is a risk of collision.

Data Integration Speeds Up Port Operations

Digitalization is also changing port management through electronic documentation and integrated data systems.

Information about vessels, arrival schedules, loading and unloading activities, shipping documents, and cargo distribution can be managed through digital platforms. Processes that previously relied on extensive manual documentation and separate communication channels can now be carried out more efficiently.

This integration helps accelerate administrative processes and reduce vessel waiting times. When relevant data can be accessed by authorized stakeholders, coordination between ship operators, port managers, and maritime authorities becomes more effective.

The study also indicates that digitalization can contribute to lower operational costs. More efficient shipping routes may reduce fuel consumption, while faster coordination can minimize delays in cargo handling and logistics distribution.

Digitalization Strengthens Shipping Safety

Safety emerged as one of the most important findings of the study. Real-time monitoring systems allow authorities to continuously track vessel positions, potentially reducing the risk of communication loss and enabling faster responses to shipping disruptions.

Digital systems can also accelerate the transmission of emergency reports. When information reaches maritime authorities more quickly, response times to potential accidents or operational disruptions can be shortened.

According to Muzarodin and his colleagues, digitalization should not be viewed merely as an effort to modernize administrative procedures. Digital technology also functions as a risk-mitigation instrument by improving information accuracy, accelerating communication, and reducing dependence on manual processes.

Infrastructure and Cybersecurity Remain Major Challenges

Despite its benefits, the implementation of digital technology in maritime transportation still faces several obstacles.

The study identified several major challenges:

  • limited communication networks in some shipping areas;

  • insufficient digital skills among some operational personnel;

  • incomplete integration between institutional systems;

  • the need for stronger data interoperability standards; and

  • growing cybersecurity risks.

The researchers noted that as more maritime systems become digitally connected, the need to strengthen data protection and cybersecurity also increases.

For this reason, maritime digitalization must be accompanied by improved network infrastructure, human resource training, inter-agency data integration, and stronger cybersecurity systems.

Implications for the Future of Indonesian Maritime Transportation

The findings provide important implications for governments, shipping companies, port managers, and maritime authorities. Successful digital transformation depends not only on acquiring new technology but also on the readiness of people, organizations, infrastructure, and governance systems.

For governments, the findings can support the development of maritime digitalization policies and standards for inter-agency data exchange. For shipping companies and port operators, digital systems can improve operational efficiency while strengthening safety management.

The researchers also emphasize that the future maritime transportation system should be developed as a socio-technical system. This means that technology must work together with human competence, institutional coordination, data integration, and digital security.
