Work accidents in
educational laboratories are not merely theoretical risks, but real threats
that demand the improvement of systematic safety management. Research conducted
by Novie Trisyani and her team from Sam Ratulangi University at the Poltekkes
Kemenkes Manado from December 2025 to February 2026 revealed that behavioral
factors and working environment conditions are the primary determinants of
student safety. These findings underscore the need for a paradigm shift from
focusing solely on individual knowledge to strengthening system-based safety
management.
Background and
Methodology
Health laboratories
are high-risk environments, ranging from chemical exposure to sharp objects.
Although their primary function is for learning, the lack of applied safety
standards often triggers accidents. This study utilized a quantitative
observational approach with a cross-sectional design, involving 111 level II
students as respondents. The researchers evaluated the impact of Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE) compliance and the availability of occupational
safety infrastructure on the incidence of work accidents over the past six
months.
Key Findings
Data indicates that
33.3% of respondents had experienced work accidents during practical work, with
the most dominant types being chemical inhalation exposure (51.4%), followed by
slipping (29.7%) and electrocution (24.3%). Other significant findings include:

Behavioral Factors: Low compliance with PPE usage increases the risk of work
accidents by 1.4 times ($p=0.036$).

Environmental Factors: Inadequate availability of Occupational Health and
Safety (K3) facilities also contributes to a 1.4-fold increase in accident risk
($p=0.018$).
Implications and
Impact
This research
demonstrates that good knowledge and attitudes alone are insufficient to
prevent accidents if not supported by a safe working environment. Novie
Trisyani and her team emphasize that educational laboratories must immediately
implement a "no PPE, no lab access" policy to ensure student
discipline. Furthermore, institutions need to conduct periodic safety audits
and standardize K3 facilities in accordance with international best practices.
This system-based approach aims not only to reduce injury risks but also to
cultivate essential safety competencies for prospective health workers starting
from their education phase.
