PONTIANAK – Career development opportunities and organizational support play a significant role in strengthening employee engagement within government institutions. A study conducted by researchers from the Faculty of Economics and Business at Muhammadiyah University of Pontianak found that career development and perceived organizational support have a positive and significant impact on employee engagement among civil servants at Badan Pusat Statistik West Kalimantan Province. The findings were published in the International Journal of Business and Applied Economics (IJBAE), Volume 5, Issue 3, in 2026.

The study highlights the importance of employee engagement as a key factor influencing productivity, loyalty, and service quality in public sector organizations. Employees who are highly engaged tend to demonstrate greater commitment, stronger motivation, and a higher willingness to contribute to organizational goals.

The research was conducted among civil servants working at the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of West Kalimantan Province. Using a quantitative approach, the researchers examined the relationship between career development, perceived organizational support, and employee engagement. The analysis aimed to determine the extent to which these factors influence employee engagement in a government workplace setting.

The findings revealed that both career development and organizational support positively affect employee engagement. Employees who perceive greater opportunities for career advancement and stronger organizational support are more likely to feel connected to their work and committed to their organization.

Key Findings

  • ·         Career development has a positive and significant effect on employee engagement.
  • ·         Perceived organizational support has a positive and significant effect on employee engagement.
  • ·         The correlation coefficient between career development, organizational support, and employee engagement is 0.414, indicating a moderate relationship.
  • ·         Career development and organizational support together explain 17.1 percent of the variation in employee engagement.
  • ·         Career development shows a significant influence with a t-value of 2.816 and a significance level of 0.006.
  • ·         Perceived organizational support shows a significant influence with a t-value of 2.119 and a significance level of 0.037.

The study explains that career development provides employees with a clear vision of their future within the organization. When employees see opportunities for professional growth, training, and promotion based on merit and competence, they tend to become more motivated and more engaged in their work.

Perceived organizational support also plays a crucial role. Employees who believe that their organization values their contributions, cares about their well-being, and provides adequate support are more likely to develop a stronger emotional connection with the institution. This encourages them to perform better and maintain long-term loyalty to the organization.

According to the researchers, combining a well-structured career development system with strong organizational support can serve as an effective strategy for increasing employee engagement in the public sector. Higher engagement levels can lead to improved productivity, better service quality, and greater organizational effectiveness.

For government agencies, the findings demonstrate that investing in human resource development offers benefits beyond improving employee competencies. Such investments also strengthen the relationship between employees and the organization, helping create a healthy, productive, and service-oriented work environment.

The researchers recommend that future studies explore additional factors influencing employee engagement, including leadership, organizational culture, compensation, and individual characteristics. These factors may help explain the remaining 82.9 percent of employee engagement variation that was not covered by the current research model.
