Animation-based learning media has been proven effective in improving environmental conservation awareness among vocational high school students. The finding was revealed in a study conducted by Edy Sabara, Marwan Ramdani Edy, and Retyana Wahrini from Universitas Negeri Makassar and published in 2026 in the International Journal of Education and Life Sciences (IJELS). The research found that animated learning significantly improved students’ environmental knowledge, attitudes, and pro-environmental behaviors.

The study comes amid growing global concern about environmental sustainability and the importance of educating younger generations about conservation. In vocational education settings, students are prepared to enter industrial sectors closely connected to natural resource use, making environmental responsibility an increasingly important competency.

According to the researchers, conventional lecture-based teaching methods often fail to engage students emotionally and cognitively in environmental topics. Animated media, however, can transform abstract environmental concepts into concrete visual experiences that are easier to understand and remember.

The research applied a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. A total of 52 vocational high school students participated in the pretest, while 43 students completed the posttest after the intervention. The experimental group learned through animated environmental conservation media, while the control group received conventional instruction.

The results showed substantial improvements across all dimensions of environmental awareness after students were exposed to the animated learning media. Based on the research data, environmental knowledge increased by 24.6 percent, environmental attitudes improved by 25.9 percent, and environmentally responsible behavior recorded the highest increase at 30.3 percent. Overall environmental awareness scores rose by 28.1 percent after the intervention.

Several major findings emerged from the study:

  • Animated media significantly improved students’ understanding of environmental conservation issues.
  • Students became more active and engaged during classroom discussions.
  • Visual learning approaches made environmental messages easier to understand.
  • Students rated the effectiveness of the animated media as “very good,” scoring 85.5 percent in the perception assessment.

Classroom observations further showed that students in the experimental group were more attentive, participated more actively in discussions, and displayed stronger interest in environmental topics compared to students taught through traditional methods. Students also described the animated media as attractive, clear, and easy to understand.

The researchers explained that animation-based learning does not only strengthen cognitive understanding but also encourages emotional engagement and behavioral change related to environmental conservation. This visual and practical approach is considered especially suitable for vocational students, who generally prefer concrete and interactive learning experiences.

The findings are considered important for the future of technology-based education. Schools and teachers are encouraged to integrate animated media into environmental and character education programs to strengthen students’ long-term sustainability awareness.

The study also recommends developing more interactive animated learning media by adding quizzes and educational mini-games to increase student participation. In addition, educational authorities are encouraged to expand teacher training programs on digital and animation-based learning to support innovative teaching practices in vocational schools.
