Jakarta – A community service team consisting of Sally Septania Napitupulu, Sudarno P. Tampubolon, Irene Vista Simanjuntak, and Antonius D. Tyas Prasetyo from Universitas Kristen Indonesia carried out a sustainable redesign and construction supervision program for the lobby of Sekolah Pilar Indonesia. The initiative aimed to improve indoor air quality, thermal comfort, spatial functionality, and the aesthetic performance of the school’s main reception area.

The school lobby plays a strategic role as the first space encountered by students, parents, and visitors. Its physical condition strongly influences both user comfort and institutional image. Initial field observations conducted by the Universitas Kristen Indonesia team identified several issues, including insufficient lighting, inefficient spatial organization, and indoor air quality affected by the proximity of parking and drop-off areas.

Dust accumulation caused by certain ceiling materials and limited project management capacity also contributed to renovation challenges. Budget constraints further emphasized the need for efficient and sustainable intervention strategies.

Through this program, the research team conducted a comprehensive assessment of the existing lobby conditions, including analysis of natural and mechanical ventilation systems, daylight performance, and indoor thermal behavior. These findings formed the basis for developing an improved interior design aligned with sustainable architectural principles.

The redesign emphasized optimizing building openings, improving cross-ventilation, and selecting environmentally friendly low-emission materials to enhance indoor environmental quality and occupant health. The updated layout introduced clearer zoning for reception services, waiting areas, discussion spaces, and information display sections.

Additional improvements included brighter interior color schemes to increase daylight reflectance and better material selection to reduce dust accumulation and maintenance requirements. Air circulation was also enhanced by introducing buffer zones that reduce pollution entering from nearby parking areas.

The Universitas Kristen Indonesia team provided integrated technical assistance throughout planning and implementation stages. Support included material selection guidance, budgeting assistance, and supervision of construction activities to ensure alignment with technical specifications.

Renovation activities involved dismantling outdated interior elements, installing new reception-area walls, upgrading lighting systems, installing ceiling structures, improving electrical installations, and applying vinyl flooring. As documented on pages 10–14 of the study, finishing work also included painting interior surfaces and installing new reception furniture to achieve a cleaner and more modern spatial appearance.

Following completion of the renovation process, the lobby demonstrated significant improvements in lighting quality, airflow circulation, spatial organization, and visual comfort. The redesigned environment now better supports school service activities and enhances the overall user experience.

Beyond physical improvements, the program strengthened the school’s internal capacity in interior project management. School administrators gained practical knowledge in planning procedures, material selection strategies, and cost-efficient implementation methods, enabling them to manage future facility development more independently.

The project demonstrates that integrating sustainable interior design with structured construction supervision can effectively improve educational facilities even under limited budget conditions. A well-designed lobby not only enhances institutional identity but also contributes to healthier and more comfortable learning environments.
