Jakarta - A digital literacy training program conducted by Supriatiningsih, Nova Rini, Ahmad Darda, Sandra DE Kaunang, and Talitha Amanda from Universitas Teknologi Muhammadiyah Jakarta significantly improved community technology skills in the PCA Matraman area of Jakarta. The training, held on December 4, 2025 and published in 2026 in the Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat Formosa (JPMF), demonstrated that targeted digital education can increase participants’ confidence in using digital tools, identifying reliable online information, and applying technology to support small business activities. The findings highlight the importance of community-based digital literacy programs in strengthening participation in Indonesia’s ongoing digital transformation.

Digital literacy is now considered a foundational capability for modern societies. Communities with limited access to digital education often face barriers in accessing online services, avoiding misinformation, and participating in digital economic activities. The Matraman training initiative illustrates how practical learning interventions can reduce these barriers and help residents adapt to rapidly changing technological environments.

Rapid advances in information and communication technologies have transformed daily life across education, commerce, and public services. However, unequal access to digital training continues to create gaps between communities that can benefit from technology and those that cannot. The research team from Universitas Teknologi Muhammadiyah Jakarta found that limited digital literacy in the PCA Matraman area was not caused by a lack of individual capability but by limited access to structured digital education suited to local needs.

The training program introduced participants to essential digital skills through an applied learning format designed for community users rather than technical specialists. Sessions included guided instruction on smartphone use, online communication platforms, information verification techniques, safe digital transactions, and responsible social media engagement. The program also addressed digital security awareness, including protection of personal data and prevention of online fraud.

The implementation combined interactive lectures, demonstrations, hands-on practice sessions, group discussions, and scenario-based simulations involving common digital risks such as misinformation and phishing attempts. This participatory structure allowed participants to immediately practice newly learned skills and apply them in real-life contexts.

Participants represented diverse backgrounds, including homemakers, youth, small business operators, and local community administrators. Before the training, most participants used smartphones primarily for basic communication such as calls and messaging. After completing the sessions, participants demonstrated improved ability to use applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube for information access, online learning, and business promotion activities.

The program also strengthened participants’ ability to evaluate digital information more critically. Community members learned how to recognize characteristics of unreliable online content and became more cautious when sharing unverified information. This improvement is particularly important in reducing the spread of misinformation within community networks.

Another important outcome involved the adoption of digital financial tools. Participants who had never used digital wallets or online banking services were able to simulate non-cash transactions and online purchases during the training sessions. These skills are especially valuable for micro and small business operators seeking to expand market reach through digital platforms.

According to Supriatiningsih of Universitas Teknologi Muhammadiyah Jakarta, the results demonstrate that communities are highly capable of adapting to technological change when appropriate training opportunities are available. The research team emphasized that earlier limitations in digital literacy were largely caused by restricted access to relevant education rather than by limitations in individual learning capacity.

The training also increased awareness of digital safety practices. Participants gained a stronger understanding of how to protect personal data, recognize online scams, and maintain responsible communication behavior on social media platforms. These improvements contribute to strengthening community resilience against cyber threats while supporting safer participation in digital environments.

The findings also show that digital literacy training can directly support local economic development. Improved knowledge of social media marketing and digital transactions enables micro and small enterprises in the PCA Matraman area to expand their customer base and improve competitiveness. As the researchers from Universitas Teknologi Muhammadiyah Jakarta explain, digital capability development is closely connected to community empowerment and economic sustainability in urban environments undergoing digital transformation.

Beyond technical skills, the training helped participants understand how to use digital technology responsibly and productively in everyday life. The initiative demonstrates that community-based digital literacy programs can serve as effective strategies for preparing citizens to participate more actively in digital society while strengthening local economic opportunities.
