FORMOSA NEWS - Banten - ITE Law and Ethical Education Improve Digital Literacy in Tangerang Community. Community service conducted by Fikran Kamal Hujjaji and Tubagus Faisal Pratama Sandjadirdja from Universitas Pamulang in a service article published in the Asian Journal of Community Services, Vol. 5 No. 2, 2026 Indonesia is widely recognized as one of the friendliest countries in the world. However, the Microsoft Digital Civility Index ranked Indonesia among the least polite countries in Southeast Asia in the online environment. This contrast highlights a gap between offline friendliness and online behavior, making digital ethics an urgent public issue.

Background: The Gap Between Offline and Online Behavior

While social harmony remains strong in daily life, online interactions often involve defamation, hate speech, threats, and misinformation. Social media and instant messaging are the most dominant forms of internet usage in Indonesia, making digital conduct a critical concern. Digital footprints can reflect real-life personality traits. For this reason, strengthening ethical awareness in cyberspace is not only about compliance with the law but also about character building and long-term reputation.

Program Location: Roemah Tawon Foundation, Tangerang

The activity was conducted at Yayasan Roemah Tawon, a community-based educational foundation supporting underprivileged families and street children in Tangerang. Participants included children, teenagers, and parents.

The program consisted of:

  1. Educational presentations using audiovisual media.
  2. Interactive discussions and Q&A sessions.
  3. Case-study simulations based on real-life scenarios.

This participatory format encouraged active engagement and practical understanding.

Key Results: Increased Awareness and Media Literacy

The final evaluation showed that most participants gained new and relevant knowledge about digital regulations and ethical conduct.

Key outcomes include

  • Participants think more carefully before posting or commenting.
  • Increased understanding of defamation and hate speech risks.
  • Greater awareness of verifying information before sharing.
  • Strong engagement when religious values were connected to legal rules.

One participant even asked how to advise family members to avoid spreading unverified information, indicating practical impact beyond the session itself.

Impact on Society and Education

This program demonstrates that digital literacy must go beyond technical skills. Legal awareness and ethical reflection are essential components of responsible online behavior.

For society

  • Reduces potential legal violations.
  • Minimizes online conflicts and misinformation.

For education

  • Serves as a model for community-based digital literacy programs.
  • Encourages early development of ethical digital character.

For public policy

  • Supports national digital literacy campaigns.
  • Strengthens collaboration between universities and communities.

The research team emphasized that collaboration between higher education institutions and grassroots communities can generate practical and sustainable solutions for digital challenges.
