Cimahi, West Java— The Influence of
Workload and Physical Work Environment on the Performance of State Civil Apparatus
(ASN) Teachers in School XYZ. This research was conducted by Futri Adeliana and
Dian Lestari from the Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and
Business, Jenderal Achmad Yani University, which will be published in the East
Asian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research (EAJMR) in 2026.
Research conducted by Futri Adeliana
and Dian Lestari revealed that proper workload management and comfortable
physical work environment conditions can significantly improve teacher
performance.
Teacher
workload: between professional demands and administrative pressures
In
practice, teachers are not only in charge of teaching in the classroom. They
also have to prepare lesson plans, conduct evaluations, guide students, and
carry out administrative tasks. The study found that more than half of the
teachers in the schools studied felt that they had a fairly high workload due
to the many additional responsibilities outside of teaching activities.
Based on
school supervision data, the number of teachers with the "excellent"
performance category has decreased in recent years. This condition shows that
there is pressure that affects teacher productivity, one of which is related to
the unbalanced distribution of tasks.
However,
research confirms that workload does not always have a negative impact. When
the workload is adjusted to capacity and working time, teachers actually show
better performance. This can be seen from the results of statistical analysis
that show a positive and significant influence between workload and teacher
performance.
Physical
work environment: simple factors with a big impact
In
addition to workload, the physical work environment is an important factor that
is often overlooked. The study found that the condition of the workspace,
lighting, air ventilation, cleanliness, and supporting facilities also affect
teachers' comfort and productivity.
Respondents
assessed that the school's physical work environment was in the "quite
good" category, but there were still several aspects that needed to be improved,
such as cleanliness management, air quality, and room color scheme. Less than
optimal physical conditions can reduce focus and work comfort, which ultimately
impacts the quality of teaching.
Adeliana
and Lestari emphasized that a comfortable and safe workspace is able to create
a conducive atmosphere so that teachers can carry out their duties optimally.
Key
findings of the study
Based on
regression analysis and statistical tests, this study produced several key
findings:
- Workload has a positive and significant influence on the
performance of ASN teachers.
- The physical work environment also has a positive effect on
improving teacher performance.
- These two factors together explain about 21.4% of teacher
performance variations, while the rest are influenced by other factors
such as leadership, motivation, or organizational culture.
These
findings suggest that improving teacher performance requires a multidimensional
approach, not only competency training, but also the management of work systems
and physical facilities.
Why
work-life balance is key
Research
highlights that the balance between the primary duties of teaching and
administrative responsibilities is a crucial issue. Many teachers admit to
having to complete extra work outside of working hours, which leads to burnout
and reduced time to prepare for lessons.
When
school management is able to manage the distribution of tasks more
proportionately, teachers tend to work more focused and effectively. Thus,
improving the work system is a strategic step to improve the quality of
education.
Implications
for the world of education and school policy
The
results of this study provide a number of practical recommendations for school
managers and education policymakers:
1.
Simplify the administrative burden of teachers
to focus on the learning process.
2.
Rearrange the division of work time to
maintain a balance of tasks.
3.
Improve the quality of the physical work
environment through cleanliness, ventilation, and more comfortable layout.
4.
Encourage collaboration between teachers to
improve teamwork.
This
approach is considered to be able to create a healthier and more productive
work environment, while improving the quality of educational services for
students.
