Discipline and Work Environment Significantly Improve Employee Performance,
Indonesian Study Finds. Research
conducted by Nurmadi Harsa Sumarta published in January 2026 in the
International Journal of Business and Applied Economics (IJBAE).
Employee performance in Indonesian
companies rises significantly when strong work discipline is supported by a
positive work environment. This conclusion comes from research conducted by
academics from Bunda Mulia University, based on data collected during the
2023–2024 period. The study highlights that clear rules, employee
responsibility, and supportive workplace conditions directly influence
productivity and job outcomes. The findings are important as organizations seek
ways to remain competitive while maintaining workforce well-being in
fast-changing business conditions.
Companies across sectors face similar
challenges: inconsistent employee attendance, declining focus, workplace
stress, and environments that do not always support optimal performance. While
technology and systems matter, day-to-day employee behavior and workplace
atmosphere often determine whether targets are achieved. Work discipline and
the physical and social environment at work therefore become key organizational
factors.
Work discipline refers to employees’
adherence to rules, punctuality, responsibility, and commitment to completing
tasks according to standards. The work environment includes physical aspects
such as lighting, workspace layout, temperature, and safety, as well as social
elements like relationships with colleagues and supervisors. Together, these
factors shape employees’ comfort, motivation, and efficiency.
How the Study Was Conducted
The researchers applied a quantitative
survey method involving employees working in organizational settings.
Respondents answered structured questionnaires measuring levels of work
discipline, perceptions of their work environment, and individual performance
indicators such as productivity, quality of output, and task completion.
The data were analyzed using
statistical modeling to examine how discipline and environment influence
performance. The results show the model explains employee performance well,
confirming that both variables play a measurable and meaningful role in shaping
work outcomes.
Key Findings
The study presents several clear
conclusions:
1. Work discipline has a significant
positive effect on employee performance.
Employees who follow rules, manage time effectively, and show responsibility
tend to complete tasks more accurately and consistently. Discipline supports
efficiency and reduces errors.
2. The work environment also has a
significant positive influence.
Comfortable physical conditions and supportive social interactions make
employees more focused and motivated. A safe and organized workplace reduces
stress and improves work quality.
3. Discipline and environment work
together.
The best performance levels appear when high discipline is combined with a
supportive environment. Even disciplined employees may struggle in poor
conditions, while good environments alone are not enough without responsible
behavior.
4. Workplace quality affects
organizational success.
The research confirms that internal work conditions are not minor details but
strategic factors that influence productivity and competitiveness.
Why This Matters
For businesses, the findings emphasize
the importance of consistent rule enforcement and fair performance standards.
Clear expectations and accountability systems help employees maintain
professional behavior. At the same time, companies should invest in workplace
improvements—better lighting, ergonomic furniture, safe facilities, and healthy
communication climates.
Human resource departments can use
these insights to design policies that balance discipline with employee
comfort. Performance management systems, attendance monitoring, and supervisor
guidance should go hand in hand with efforts to create supportive working
conditions.
From a broader perspective, productive
employees contribute to economic stability. When companies improve discipline
and workplace environments, they not only raise output but also enhance
employee satisfaction and reduce turnover.
Implications for Education and Policy
Business and management education
programs can use these findings to highlight the importance of human resource
practices, not just technical skills. Future managers must understand how
workplace structure and behavior influence outcomes.
For policymakers, the research
suggests that occupational standards, workplace safety regulations, and
employee welfare initiatives indirectly strengthen national productivity.
Supporting businesses in improving workplace conditions can have wide economic
benefits.
Researchers from Bunda Mulia
University note that performance improvement does not rely solely on advanced
technology. Consistent discipline and supportive environments remain
foundational elements of effective organizations.
