A Growing Historic Area
Lasem is known as a coastal city with a long history of Chinese and Javanese cultural interactions. Tjoe An Kiong Temple stands in Soditan Village, a strategic area that passes through the Pantura route and has quite high trade and service activities. According to the temple manager, this area has undergone renovation since the 19th century due to floods, but the main building is still maintained today. Cultural traditions such as temple birthday celebrations filled with puppet shows, barongsai, and gamelan are still going on today. This condition emphasizes the importance of supporting facilities that are able to accommodate community activities without damaging the historical value of the area.
Architecture-Based Community Service Approach
This program is a community service activity by the Architecture team of the Indonesian Christian University. The activity is carried out through several stages:
- Preparation and coordination with temple managers and the community.
- Field observation through location surveys, interviews, and documentation.
- Design design and presentation to stakeholders to get input.
This
participatory approach ensures the design is tailored to the needs of the
community while maintaining the historical value of the area.
Key
Outcome: Flexible and Contextual Multipurpose Building Design
The
activity resulted in a multipurpose building architectural design that was
designed to blend in with the heritage environment. The output of the program
is not only in the form of design drawings, but also 3D models and cost budget
plans to support the realization of development.
Some
of the key principles of design include:
- Flexibility of space for a variety of
activities.
- User comfort and space efficiency.
- Durable and aesthetically pleasing
material.
- Natural lighting and ventilation.
- Accessibility for all users.
The
building is planned to be on the south side of the temple complex on land owned
by the management, so as not to interfere with the structure of the main
building.
Benefits
for Society and Cultural Preservation
The
design of this multipurpose building has a far-reaching impact:
For
the people of Lasem
- There is space for weddings, meetings, exhibitions and social activities
- Improve local social and economic interaction
For
cultural preservation
- Additional activities are no longer carried out in the main temple area
- The historical value of the building is maintained
For
the world of education
Becoming an example of campus and
community collaboration in sustainable development
The
research team emphasizes that collaboration between universities and society
can produce architectural solutions that are contextual, sustainable, and have
a real impact.
