FORMOSA NEWS - Jawa Timur - Entrepreneurship education at Islamic boarding schools is proving to be an effective way to prepare young people for economic independence. A recent study conducted by Ilzania Khela K and colleagues from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Negeri Surabaya, shows that structured entrepreneurship programs significantly strengthen students’ entrepreneurial character at Attibyan Islamic Boarding School, Gempol, Pasuruan, East Java.

Published in the Formosa Journal of Multidisciplinary Research (2026), the study highlights how combining religious education with practical business training helps students develop confidence, creativity, and readiness to enter the business world. The findings are increasingly relevant as pesantren across Indonesia are encouraged to play a larger role in economic empowerment and youth entrepreneurship.

Pesantren as a Growing Center for Entrepreneurship

Islamic boarding schools have traditionally focused on religious and moral education. However, changing economic conditions and limited employment opportunities for young people have pushed many pesantren to expand their role.

At Attibyan Islamic Boarding School, entrepreneurship education has become part of daily learning activities. Students are involved in managing small business units, learning production processes, handling simple financial management, and working collaboratively under teacher supervision.

This approach reflects the growing santripreneur movement, which promotes entrepreneurship rooted in Islamic values such as honesty, discipline, responsibility, and social awareness.

How the Study Was Conducted

The research used a quantitative survey method involving students who actively participated in entrepreneurship programs at the boarding school. Data were collected through questionnaires measuring students’ entrepreneurial attitudes, skills, and behavior.

The analysis applied statistical testing to ensure data reliability and accuracy. Regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between entrepreneurship education and students’ entrepreneurial spirit.

The results showed consistent patterns, confirming that entrepreneurship education plays a meaningful role in shaping students’ mindset and behavior toward business activities.

Key Findings: Entrepreneurship Education Makes a Real Difference

The study revealed several important outcomes from the implementation of entrepreneurship education at the pesantren:

  • Stronger independence, as students became more confident in making decisions and managing responsibilities
  • Improved creativity and innovation, especially in developing products and business ideas
  • Higher willingness to take risks, an essential trait for entrepreneurship
  • Better discipline and work ethic, reinforced by religious values
  • Greater readiness for real-world economic challenges

Students who were actively involved in practical business activities showed stronger entrepreneurial characteristics compared to those who only received theoretical instruction.

The study also confirmed that hands-on learning plays a critical role. Direct involvement in business operations allowed students to understand real market dynamics, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Practical Impact for Education and Policy

The findings carry important implications for education providers and policymakers. Entrepreneurship education in pesantren can serve as an effective model for developing youth entrepreneurship, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.

For schools and pesantren, the study highlights the importance of:

  • Integrating entrepreneurship into the curriculum
  • Providing real business practice, not only theory
  • Strengthening mentoring and guidance systems
  • Supporting student-led business initiatives

For policymakers, the research supports the idea that pesantren-based entrepreneurship programs can contribute to economic resilience, job creation, and long-term community development.

According to the authors, entrepreneurship education becomes more effective when it is aligned with local values and supported by real practice. The study emphasizes that character building and economic skills should go hand in hand to produce independent and resilient graduates.
