Community-Based Waste Management in Batu City Cuts Emissions and Strengthens Climate Resilience

Malang- Community-based waste management in Krajan Hamlet, Torongrejo Village, Batu City, East Java, has proven effective in reducing household waste and supporting climate change mitigation efforts. The findings were reported by Anis Artiyani and a multidisciplinary team from Institut Teknologi Nasional (ITN) Malang, based on a community engagement program published in Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat Bestari (JPMB) in January 2026.

The initiative aligns with Indonesia’s Climate Village Program (ProKlim), a national policy framework encouraging local communities to take an active role in climate mitigation and adaptation. The results are considered significant, as poor waste management remains a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions across urban and rural areas.

Waste Challenges at the Local Level

Indonesia continues to face serious challenges in managing household waste due to urbanization, changing consumption patterns, and limited infrastructure. In many communities, waste is disposed of directly at landfills without prior treatment, increasing environmental pollution and climate risks.

Krajan Hamlet, located in the highland area of Batu City, generates waste dominated by organic materials from household and agricultural activities. This condition prompted the adoption of a community-driven waste management model that emphasizes local participation and sustainability.

Simple, Participatory Field Approach

The ITN Malang team conducted field observations, interviews with residents and local authorities, and document analysis to understand existing waste management practices. Based on these findings, participatory programs were implemented, including waste segregation education, compost and eco-enzyme training, and the establishment of a community-based waste bank.

Residents were positioned as the main actors, while the academic team served as facilitators and technical mentors throughout the process.

Tangible Results at the Household Level

The program led to measurable behavioral changes. Around 85 percent of participants were able to correctly separate organic and inorganic waste after the outreach activities. A community waste bank was successfully established and began operating, generating small but tangible economic value from recyclable materials such as plastic bottles and paper.

Organic waste processing through composting significantly reduced the volume of waste sent to landfills. Additional activities included tree planting, water conservation, and other climate adaptation measures, such as the construction of infiltration wells.

Social, Economic, and Environmental Impact

According to Anis Artiyani, community-based waste management delivers broader benefits beyond environmental cleanliness. “When residents are directly involved, environmental awareness increases and economic benefits start to emerge,” she explained.

The model demonstrates strong potential for replication in other villages participating in the Climate Village Program. Collaboration between local communities, village governments, and higher education institutions is identified as a key factor in ensuring long-term sustainability.
