A research team from Universitas Sunan Gresik consisting of Ani Khofiati, Sulalatun Nikma, and Imma ya'tiana has successfully completed in-depth research on the strategies of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers in shaping the religious character of students at MTs Kanjeng Sepuh Sidayu Gresik for the 2025/2026 academic year. This research plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges of character education for the younger generation amidst globalization and complex technological developments.
Character education, particularly the formation of religious traits, is the primary foundation in instilling values of faith, piety, and noble morals in students. Amidst the dynamics of Generation Z, who are closely tied to instant information, the world of education frequently faces challenges in the form of a dichotomy between theoretical and practical aspects. Therefore, the application of innovative strategies is urgently needed so that religious values are not only understood cognitively but also genuinely internalized in daily life.
To examine these strategies, the researchers utilized a descriptive qualitative method depicting natural field conditions. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, direct observation of religious activities at school, and documentation studies. The validity of the data was then tested through triangulation techniques and interactive analysis.
Based on the research results, here are the key findings from the implementation of strategies at the school:
- The religious character of students at MTs Kanjeng Sepuh Sidayu Gresik has been well-formed.
- This is reflected in the implementation of the 7S culture—covering smiles, greetings, welcoming, politeness, courtesy, patience, and solidarity—in daily activities.
- PAI teachers apply habituation strategies through routine activities such as congregational Dhuha and Dhuhr prayers, reading the Qur'an before studying, and arriving on time.
- Teachers also provide concrete role models by maintaining neat appearances, speaking politely, and actively participating in various religious activities at school.
- Character supervision is carried out consistently through a reward system in the form of additional score points and educational punishments such as writing or memorizing short verses for students who violate rules.
The findings from Ani Khofiati and fellow academicians from Universitas Sunan Gresik provide broad implications for the world of education, particularly in strengthening the quality of literacy and character instruction at the secondary school level. This research proves that successful moral formation in students cannot rely solely on classroom instruction, but requires comprehensive collaboration among teachers, the principal, a supportive environment, and parental motivation. This model can be adopted by other educational institutions as a practical reference to produce a dignified and noble-minded younger generation.
