Santiago City – Teachers who effectively utilize Norm-Referenced Computer-Adaptive Testing (CAT) reports are better equipped to develop data-driven instructional plans that enhance students' academic achievement. This finding was reported by Laurence C. Rabanal and Celso C. Dumalig of Northeastern College, Inc. Graduate School, Santiago City, Philippines, in the International Journal of Scientific Multidisciplinary Research published in July 2026. The study demonstrates that consistent use of CAT reports strengthens instructional planning and contributes to improved student learning outcomes through evidence-based teaching practices.
As education increasingly embraces evidence-based decision-making, schools are expected to use assessment data not merely for grading but also for improving classroom instruction. One assessment approach gaining attention is Computer-Adaptive Testing (CAT), a technology-driven system that automatically adjusts question difficulty according to each student's performance. Beyond generating scores, CAT provides detailed reports on students' strengths, weaknesses, and academic progress, enabling teachers to make more informed instructional decisions. However, the effectiveness of this technology depends largely on teachers' ability to interpret and apply assessment data effectively.
The research was conducted at Nova Academy in the Philippines using a quantitative correlational research design involving 50 purposively selected teachers. Data were collected through a researcher-developed questionnaire measuring teachers' utilization of CAT reports and their instructional planning practices, while students' academic performance was obtained from CAT-generated assessment reports. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, and mediation analysis to examine the relationships among CAT report utilization, instructional planning, and student achievement.
The findings revealed that teachers demonstrated a high level of CAT report utilization, with an overall mean score of 4.29. Teachers actively used CAT reports to interpret assessment results, identify students' strengths and weaknesses, and monitor academic progress. The highest-rated competency was understanding students' learning progress, which obtained a mean score of 4.36, while teachers also showed strong competence in analyzing overall class performance. These results indicate that educators have effectively incorporated assessment data into their instructional decision-making processes.
Teachers also showed high competence in using CAT reports to identify students' learning needs. The overall mean for identifying students' strengths and weaknesses reached 4.31, while monitoring students' academic progress recorded an overall mean of 4.26. Teachers utilized assessment reports to determine which learners required additional support, group students according to ability levels, provide individualized feedback, and continuously monitor learning progress throughout the academic year.
Regarding instructional planning, the study found an overall mean of 4.31, indicating a consistently high level of implementation. Teachers regularly integrated CAT results into lesson design, differentiated instruction according to students' learning needs, prepared targeted remediation for struggling learners, and developed enrichment activities for high-achieving students. Among these instructional planning dimensions, remediation strategies received the highest mean score (4.33), followed by lesson design (4.32), differentiated instruction (4.30), and enrichment activities (4.27). These findings suggest that CAT reports provide valuable guidance for creating more personalized and effective classroom instruction.
The study further reported that students achieved an overall academic performance classified as Satisfactory, with an average score of 84.27. Grade 5 students achieved the highest average score (86.25) among all grade levels. Across subject areas, Filipino (86.10) and English (85.30) recorded higher average performance than Science (84.20) and Mathematics (83.75), although all subjects remained within the satisfactory performance category. The results indicate that Mathematics and Science continue to require additional instructional support despite generally positive academic outcomes.
Statistical analysis demonstrated a strong and significant relationship between teachers' use of CAT reports and instructional planning (r = 0.72, p < 0.001). This finding indicates that teachers who frequently analyze CAT reports are more capable of identifying students' learning gaps, designing appropriate lessons, selecting suitable instructional strategies, and making evidence-based classroom decisions.
A similarly significant relationship was found between CAT report utilization and student achievement. The correlation coefficient of r = 0.68 (p < 0.001) confirms that greater use of CAT reports is associated with better academic performance. Teachers who consistently rely on CAT data to monitor student progress, adjust instruction, and provide timely interventions are more likely to facilitate improved learning outcomes.
The mediation analysis further revealed that instructional planning partially mediates the relationship between CAT report utilization and student achievement. The analysis produced a direct effect of 0.45 and an indirect effect of 0.27, indicating that CAT reports improve student performance both directly and indirectly by enhancing teachers' instructional planning. In other words, effective interpretation and application of assessment data enable teachers to develop more targeted lesson plans that ultimately improve students' academic success.
The researchers conclude that Computer-Adaptive Testing reports represent a powerful tool for supporting evidence-based instruction. They recommend continuous professional development to strengthen teachers' assessment literacy and data interpretation skills. Schools are also encouraged to integrate CAT reports more systematically into instructional planning by providing ongoing training and institutional support that promote data-driven teaching and learning practices.
