The success of cooperative learning in higher education depends on far more than simply placing students into groups. A new study published in 2026 reveals that students develop sharply different psychological responses to collaborative learning, with some becoming more engaged and motivated while others experience anxiety, frustration, and social withdrawal. The research was conducted by Tania Jannah, Syafril, Liawati, Boby Saputra, and Rae Shita from STIE Muara Teweh and STIMI Banjarmasin, Indonesia, and published in the International Journal of Global Sustainable Research (IJGSR). The findings provide timely insights as universities worldwide continue to redesign learning environments for the digital and artificial intelligence era.
Why Cooperative Learning Matters in the AI Era
Higher education is undergoing rapid transformation as artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and online information have fundamentally changed how students learn. Rather than serving solely as information providers, lecturers are increasingly expected to guide discussion, facilitate collaboration, and develop students' communication, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.
Cooperative learning has become one of the most widely promoted instructional strategies because it encourages students to work together in small groups while solving problems, discussing ideas, and completing academic tasks. These collaborative experiences are considered essential for developing the competencies required in the modern workforce.
Despite its widespread adoption, educators frequently observe that cooperative learning produces inconsistent outcomes. While some students thrive in collaborative settings, others become passive, disengaged, or frustrated. Previous research has often focused on academic performance while paying less attention to the psychological experiences that shape students' attitudes toward group work. The Indonesian researchers sought to better understand these hidden psychological dynamics and explain why cooperative learning succeeds in some classrooms but struggles in others.
Looking Beyond Academic Scores
Instead of measuring examination results or grades, the researchers explored how students think, feel, and behave during cooperative learning.
The study adopted a qualitative descriptive approach. Researchers combined literature review, passive classroom observation, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and documentation of students' learning activities. Participants were selected intentionally because they had completed at least one semester of cooperative learning and demonstrated either highly positive or highly negative attitudes toward collaborative learning.
To improve reliability, the research employed multiple sources of evidence, including classroom observations, interviews, and reflective documents. Data were analyzed through qualitative coding, thematic organization, and repeated verification until no new patterns emerged.
Three Psychological Dimensions Shape Student Attitudes
The research found that student attitudes toward cooperative learning are strongly polarized rather than neutral. These attitudes develop across three interconnected psychological dimensions:
Cognitive dimension (beliefs):
Students with positive attitudes viewed cooperative learning as an effective way to deepen understanding, exchange ideas, and solve complex problems together. In contrast, students with negative attitudes believed group work often wasted time and reduced learning quality because some classmates lacked sufficient understanding of the subject.
Affective dimension (emotions):
Well-organized groups created feelings of comfort, support, and psychological safety. Students felt confident expressing opinions and experienced lower academic stress. However, dysfunctional groups generated anxiety, frustration, fear of negative evaluation, and resentment over unequal workloads.
Conative or behavioral dimension (actions):
Positive psychological experiences encouraged active participation, fair task distribution, and proactive communication. Negative experiences resulted in withdrawal, passive participation, and "social loafing," where some students relied heavily on others to complete group assignments. The study also found that highly capable students sometimes completed most of the work themselves because they lacked confidence in their teammates, unintentionally reducing participation from other group members.
Random Groups Are Not Enough
One of the study's most important conclusions challenges a common assumption in education—that cooperative learning automatically succeeds whenever students are assigned to groups.
Instead, the findings demonstrate that successful collaboration depends on careful instructional design. Lecturers must establish clear expectations, define individual responsibilities, monitor participation, and ensure that every student contributes meaningfully.
The researchers argue that unequal task distribution is not simply a matter of student motivation. Rather, it reflects weaknesses in classroom management and assessment systems that reward only the final group product instead of recognizing each individual's contribution.
To address this issue, the study recommends adopting a dual-accountability approach that evaluates both group outcomes and individual performance. Digital work portfolios, anonymous peer assessment, and regular self-reflection activities could improve fairness, transparency, and accountability within collaborative learning environments.
Digital Collaboration May Reduce Student Anxiety
Another notable finding is the role of digital technology in improving cooperative learning.
Students who experienced anxiety during face-to-face discussions often participated more confidently through online communication platforms. Text-based collaboration allowed quieter or more introverted students to contribute ideas without the pressure of speaking in front of classmates.
The researchers suggest that future classrooms should integrate physical and digital collaboration rather than relying exclusively on traditional face-to-face interaction. Such blended approaches may create more inclusive learning environments while reducing psychological barriers that discourage participation.
