SmartPLS Training Enhances Data Analysis Competence and Academic Publication for Pattimura University Students

Ilusstration by AI

Eighteen students from the Management Study Program at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Pattimura University, participated in an intensive training program on Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) data analysis using SmartPLS to strengthen their research skills and scientific publication capabilities. This community service activity, led by Jacsy Tubalawony and their team, was conducted to equip students with technical quantitative data processing skills relevant to current academic demands.

Addressing Student Research Challenges

In the era of digital transformation, universities are pressured to increase scientific publication productivity. However, students often face obstacles in understanding complex quantitative research methodologies. Many students still rely on simple regression methods that lack the depth required to test complex variable relationships. Limited technical understanding of how to use modern statistical software, such as SmartPLS, often leads to difficulties in interpreting research results and slows down the completion of final projects and the publication of scientific articles.

Interactive Training and Hands-on Practice

This activity implemented a comprehensive training method, including:

  • ·         Theoretical Delivery: Interactive lectures on the fundamental concepts of SEM-PLS.
  • ·         Hands-on Practice: Direct simulation of research data processing performed independently by participants.
  • ·         Mentoring: Consultation sessions to help participants resolve analytical obstacles within their own research data.
  • ·         Evaluation: Assessment of participants' understanding levels through discussions and demonstrations of software usage.

Participants were trained to operate various stages of analysis, ranging from model construction, outer and inner model testing, to validity and reliability testing, as well as hypothesis interpretation.

Impact and Academic Implications

The results of the activity showed a significant increase in participants' understanding regarding SEM-PLS-based quantitative research methodologies. Students are now able to compile research results in accordance with scientific journal standards, which is expected to improve the quality of their academic writing. Jacsy Tubalawony and the team emphasized that mastering modern data analysis technology is crucial for students so that their resulting research is more systematic, innovative, and competitive at both national and international levels.
