This community service activity, conducted by Saleh Tutupoho and his team from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Pattimura, in June 2026, aimed to improve students' technical skills in reference management and scientific citation writing.

Background and Issues

Many final-year students in the Management Study Program at Universitas Pattimura still struggle with managing references manually. This often leads to disorganized bibliographies, citation format errors, and time inefficiencies during the preparation of their final projects (theses).

Implementation Methods

The activity was attended by 18 students and was conducted through a practical approach, including:

  • Material Presentation: Introduction to the functions and benefits of the Mendeley application.
  • Demonstration: Guidance on Mendeley installation and synchronization with web browsers.
  • Hands-on Practice: Mentoring on the use of Mendeley integration with Microsoft Word.
  • Mentoring: Technical guidance on creating automatic citations and compiling bibliographies according to scientific writing style standards.

Key Findings

  • Skill Enhancement: Students successfully mastered Mendeley installation, library management, the use of automatic citations in Microsoft Word, and instant bibliography compilation techniques.
  • Writing Efficiency: The use of Mendeley proved capable of significantly reducing the time required for reference compilation and improving the accuracy of the formatting in students' scientific papers.
  • Quality of Scientific Papers: With the ease of citation management, students are more motivated to produce scientific work with better reference standards and avoid citation errors.

Implications for Students

This training has a positive impact on students' academic readiness:

  1. Writing Standardization: Helping students meet academic standards in writing their final projects/theses.
  2. Academic Independence: Providing crucial practical skills to support the research process and the writing of credible scientific papers.
  3. Literacy Culture: Encouraging the use of technological tools to improve the quality of research and academic integrity on campus.
