FORMOSA NEWS - Malang - Integrating school culture with quality assurance systems significantly improves the quality of education in Islamic private schools, according to a 2026 study conducted by Ali Efendi, Rr. Eko Susetyorini, and Baiduri from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The findings demonstrate that educational quality extends beyond academic achievement and includes character development supported by sustainable management practices.

As demands for high-quality education continue to grow in the 21st century, schools are expected to produce graduates who possess not only strong academic abilities but also character, discipline, and adaptability. Islamic schools have traditionally emphasized religious and moral values, yet maintaining educational excellence requires more than values alone. It also depends on effective quality management systems.

Researchers noted that school culture and quality assurance are often implemented separately. School culture generally focuses on values and daily habits, while quality assurance tends to emphasize administrative standards and compliance. The study found that combining these two elements creates a stronger and more sustainable educational framework.

Ali Efendi and his colleagues from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang developed an integrated model that combines school culture with student-centered quality assurance. According to the researchers, this approach creates a continuous cycle of improvement that positively affects all dimensions of education.

The study was conducted using a qualitative case study approach at Al Falah Darussalam Islamic Elementary School and Junior High School. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving school principals, teachers, students, and parents. This method allowed researchers to capture a comprehensive picture of how cultural values and quality assurance practices interact in everyday school life.

The findings revealed that a strong school culture serves as the foundation for educational quality. Religious values, discipline, and academic habits are not merely slogans but have become part of students’ daily routines. Activities such as congregational prayers, Islamic etiquette programs, and literacy activities are implemented consistently throughout the school environment.

Students reported that they experience a supportive and conducive learning atmosphere. Parents also observed positive changes in their children, particularly in discipline, responsibility, and moral behavior.

Meanwhile, the school's quality assurance system operates systematically through planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement. Teachers assess students not only in cognitive aspects but also in attitudes and practical skills. Regular evaluations and feedback are provided to help students improve their learning process.

One of the study's most important findings is the successful integration of school culture and quality assurance. Values such as honesty, responsibility, and discipline are incorporated into student assessment indicators. As a result, educational success is measured not only by academic scores but also by character development.

The research showed that this integration positively affected four dimensions of educational quality:

  • Input: Availability of competent teachers and adequate facilities.
  • Process: Active, interactive, and value-based learning practices.
  • Output: Improved academic and non-academic achievements among students.
  • Outcome: Stronger character development, greater discipline, independence, and better moral values.

According to Ali Efendi and his team, school culture functions as the driving force that shapes values and behaviors, while quality assurance acts as a control mechanism that ensures continuous improvement. Together, they create a sustainable cycle that supports educational excellence.

The findings have important implications for schools and policymakers in Indonesia. Educational institutions should no longer rely solely on positive school culture or administrative quality systems independently. Instead, both components should be integrated into a comprehensive strategy to ensure long-term improvement.

The proposed model is considered relevant not only for Islamic schools but also for other educational institutions seeking holistic and sustainable quality enhancement. School leaders, teachers, and policymakers can adopt this framework to produce graduates who excel academically while possessing strong character.

Although the study focused on one Islamic private school, the researchers recommend further testing of the model in different educational settings and over longer periods to validate its broader applicability.

From a theoretical perspective, the study contributes to educational management literature by expanding Total Quality Management (TQM) concepts through the inclusion of school culture as a critical factor in quality improvement. Practically, it offers a strategic framework for creating sustainable educational excellence.
