The Liat Pulagajjat tradition in the Mentawai Islands is not merely an art performance but an instrument of character education rooted in local wisdom (ethnopedagogy). Research conducted by Zulfa and her team from Universitas PGRI Sumatera Barat and other collaborators in May 2026 dissects how noble values are passed down through the symbolism of this ritual.
Background and Objectives
Amidst the currents of modernization, local wisdom is often threatened with being forgotten. This study aims to explore the dimensions of character education within the Liat Pulagajjat tradition. The primary focus is to understand how the aesthetic structure, movement symbolism, and oral narratives in the ritual serve as media for character building for the Mentawai community, especially the younger generation.
Research Methodology
The researchers employed a qualitative approach using the ethnographic method. Data were collected through in-depth observations of the ritual processions and interviews with traditional leaders (Sikerei) and community members. The observed processions included stages such as Lia Siboitok (taddat lia), Sikebbukat sibakkat katcaila, Pasibitbit Sipitto', Lia Sikarua, and Iriq toitet.
