Medan, Indonesia — Ethical leadership characterized by integrity, fairness, and transparency plays a crucial role in strengthening corporate governance. This finding was reported in a study conducted by Darmilisani, Afro Afifah Siregar, Putri Riskiah, and Afrizahanny Meivia from Universitas Panca Budi, Medan, and published in the 2026 edition of the East Asian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research (EAJMR).

The study highlights that effective corporate governance depends not only on organizational structures and regulations but also on leadership behavior that fosters trust throughout the organization. As businesses face increasing demands for transparency, accountability, and sustainability, ethical leadership has emerged as a key driver of organizational success.

Corporate scandals involving corruption, financial manipulation, and abuse of authority have demonstrated that governance mechanisms alone are insufficient without ethical leadership. The researchers argue that leadership grounded in moral values is essential for creating sustainable and trustworthy organizations.

Using a qualitative case-study approach, the researchers collected data through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and organizational document reviews. Participants included leaders, managers, and employees with firsthand experience of leadership practices and governance implementation.

The findings revealed that integrity is the most prominent characteristic associated with ethical leadership. Employees reported greater confidence in leaders who consistently align their actions with their words and take responsibility for their decisions.

Fairness also emerged as a significant factor. Participants emphasized that leaders who apply policies equally and avoid favoritism create a more inclusive and supportive work environment. Such practices strengthen employee engagement and reinforce perceptions of organizational justice.

Transparency was another major theme identified in the study. Leaders who openly communicate information, explain the rationale behind decisions, and involve employees in organizational processes were found to foster stronger trust among team members. Transparency reduces uncertainty and enhances employees’ sense of belonging.

The research further demonstrated that organizational trust develops gradually through ongoing interactions between leaders and employees. Honest communication, consistent decision-making, and genuine concern for employee well-being were identified as key contributors to trust-building.

Once trust is established, corporate governance becomes more effective. Employees are more willing to comply with policies, support organizational decisions, and engage in ethical behavior. In this environment, governance mechanisms are viewed not as external controls but as shared commitments based on collective values.

According to the study, corporate governance should be understood as a daily organizational practice rather than merely a formal compliance system. Transparency, accountability, and policy adherence become stronger when supported by ethical leadership and high levels of organizational trust.

The researchers found that ethical leadership, organizational trust, and corporate governance operate as an interconnected system. Ethical leadership builds trust, trust strengthens governance implementation, and effective governance institutionalizes ethical values throughout the organization.

These findings carry important implications for business leaders. Organizations seeking stronger governance should focus not only on regulatory compliance but also on developing leadership capabilities rooted in ethics and integrity. Leadership development programs that emphasize transparency, fairness, and accountability may contribute significantly to organizational sustainability.

The study also offers valuable insights for public institutions and nonprofit organizations. Ethical leadership can enhance public trust, improve accountability, and strengthen governance practices across different sectors.

Ultimately, the research concludes that sustainable governance begins with trusted leadership. Organizations that cultivate ethical leaders are better positioned to achieve long-term performance, stakeholder confidence, and organizational resilience.
