The
phenomenon of mixing Indonesian and English has become increasingly common in
digital educational content, particularly on the YouTube channel "Kok
Bisa?". Ely Purwanti and her research team from Universitas PGRI
Indraprasta conducted a study in 2026 to examine how this code-mixing practice
serves as an effective communication strategy to engage Generation Z. These
findings are essential for understanding how language evolution in digital
spaces can enhance audience absorption of complex educational material.
Language
as a Bridge for Digital Education
In
the digital era, creators of educational content are challenged to present
heavy material in a way that is light and easy to understand. A common
challenge is how to convey scientific terms or global concepts while remaining
relevant to the daily lives of young viewers. Without the right linguistic
strategy, educational material risks becoming stiff and tedious. The use of
code-mixing between Indonesian and English emerges as a pragmatic solution for
creators to maintain a flow of communication that remains fluid, approachable,
and aligned with the digital lifestyle trends of the target audience.
Digital
Sociolinguistic Analysis Method
The
researchers applied a digital sociolinguistic approach using a qualitative
descriptive method. The main focus of this study was to analyze the
relationship between language use and the social context of digital
communication. The research team collected data from 20 videos uploaded to the
"Kok Bisa?" YouTube channel between January and June 2024. Data
collection was conducted through non-participatory observation, where
researchers meticulously recorded every instance of code-mixing used by the
creators while explaining educational topics.
Key
Findings: The Effectiveness of Code-Mixing
The
analysis demonstrates that code-mixing on the "Kok Bisa?" channel
functions as more than just a style of speech; it is a strategic
information-delivery tool:
- ·
Simplification of Terms: Using English terms blended into Indonesian sentences
makes it easier for the audience to understand technical jargon that often
lacks equally concise equivalents in Indonesian.
- ·
Building Rapport: Code-mixing creates a more relaxed and familiar
discussion atmosphere, which is highly favored by the Gen Z demographic as the
primary audience.
- ·
Explanatory Function: Mixed codes serve as qualifiers or explanations for
concepts, helping the audience navigate information more efficiently without
losing the core educational message.
- ·
Communication Efficiency: This practice shortens the time required to convey
information, making the duration of educational content more compact yet still
substantial.
Impact
on Education and Content Creators
This
research confirms that language use in social media educational content is a
positive form of linguistic adaptation, provided the goal is communicative
effectiveness. Ely Purwanti and her team from Universitas PGRI Indraprasta
conclude that for business players and educators, adopting a flexible and
multicultural language style can significantly increase audience engagement.
This indicates that future language literacy is no longer limited to formal
rules, but rather on the ability to communicate adaptively according to the
digital medium being used.
