Guiuan, Philippines — A new study has found that properly aligned instructional materials significantly improve student engagement in elementary classrooms. The research was conducted by Sanny Rose Daganta, Angelica C. Catenza, Anita Jane A. Amano, and Florabel C. Tejana from Eastern Samar State University-Guiuan Campus and published in 2026 in the East Asian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research.

The study highlights how learning materials that match curriculum standards, lesson objectives, and assessments can help students stay focused, participate actively, and enjoy classroom learning more effectively.

Across Asia, education reforms continue to emphasize curriculum alignment as a key strategy for improving educational quality. However, many schools still struggle with limited resources, delayed textbook distribution, and inconsistent teaching materials.

To explore this issue, researchers examined 31 Grade 6 learners at Barbo Elementary School in Eastern Samar, Philippines.

Using validated questionnaires, the researchers measured both instructional material alignment and student engagement.

The results showed a very high level of instructional material alignment, scoring 4.33 out of 5. Students reported that classroom materials clearly supported lesson goals, matched curriculum expectations, and helped them prepare for assessments.

Student engagement was also high, with an average score of 4.28. Learners were more attentive, more motivated, and more cognitively involved when materials were relevant and understandable.

Behavioral engagement ranked the highest, indicating that students were actively participating and completing tasks consistently. Emotional engagement was also strong, showing that students enjoyed the learning process and felt confident in classroom activities.

Cognitive engagement revealed that students often reflected deeply on lessons and connected classroom content to real-life situations.

Most importantly, the study found a statistically significant positive relationship between instructional material alignment and student engagement, with a correlation score of 0.369.

Although the relationship was categorized as low, it confirms that better-aligned materials contribute to stronger classroom participation and learning motivation.

According to the researchers, these findings reinforce the idea that instructional materials are not just teaching tools but essential drivers of student learning experiences.

For educators and policymakers, the study offers a practical reminder: improving the quality and relevance of learning materials can directly improve how students engage in education.
