PALEMBANG – Adaptive leadership plays a critical role in improving employee performance in the energy industry, where organizations must continuously respond to technological advancements and changing operational challenges. A study conducted by Ramadhan, Setyadi, Fitriasuri, and Fransica found that adaptive leadership has a positive and significant influence on employee performance at PT PLN Indonesia Power's Keramasan Power Generation Business Unit (UBP Keramasan). The findings were published in the International Journal of Business and Applied Economics (IJBAE), Volume 5, Issue 3, in 2026.

The research is particularly relevant as energy companies face increasing pressure to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving business environment. Organizations are required to respond quickly to technological developments, regulatory changes, and operational demands. In such conditions, leaders who can adapt their strategies and management approaches become essential for maintaining organizational productivity and performance.

The study was conducted among employees of PT PLN Indonesia Power UBP Keramasan in Palembang. Using a quantitative research approach, the researchers distributed questionnaires to measure the relationship between adaptive leadership and employee performance. Statistical analysis was then used to evaluate the impact of leadership practices on employee outcomes.

The results showed that leaders who can adjust to changing circumstances, provide flexible guidance, and encourage innovation contribute significantly to higher employee performance. Employees working under adaptive leaders tend to be more prepared for change, more productive, and more capable of completing tasks effectively.

Key Findings

  • ·         Adaptive leadership has a positive and significant effect on employee performance.
  • ·         Leaders who can adjust to changing work environments help improve employee productivity.
  • ·         Flexibility in decision-making enables employees to perform their tasks more effectively.
  • ·         Support for innovation and continuous learning strengthens employees’ ability to handle workplace challenges.
  • ·         Adaptive leadership creates a more responsive and resilient organizational environment.

The study explains that adaptive leadership is not solely focused on achieving organizational targets. It also emphasizes a leader’s ability to recognize changing situations and adjust leadership approaches accordingly. Adaptive leaders are capable of identifying emerging challenges, developing appropriate solutions, and helping employees navigate organizational change successfully.

According to Ramadhan and fellow researchers, organizations led by adaptive leaders are better positioned to maintain strong performance during periods of uncertainty. Leaders who embrace change and support employee development can improve operational effectiveness while strengthening organizational competitiveness.

For PT PLN Indonesia Power and other energy-sector organizations, the findings highlight the importance of leadership development in responding to industry transformation. Leadership training programs that emphasize adaptability, innovation, and strategic decision-making can serve as valuable investments in long-term organizational performance.

The researchers also noted that rapid technological change and evolving business demands require leaders who can do more than manage daily operations. Modern organizations need leaders who can guide transformation and help employees adapt to new challenges. As a result, adaptive leadership is increasingly becoming a key factor in achieving sustainable organizational success.
