FORMOSA NEWS - Semarang - The adoption of the QRIS digital payment system is significantly improving the performance of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Central Java, Indonesia. This finding comes from a 2026 study conducted by Zakiya Miftahul Misbah and An’im Kafabih of Diponegoro University, Semarang. Published in the Jurnal Ekonomi dan Bisnis Digital (MINISTAL), the research highlights how digital payments are reshaping small business operations and strengthening their competitiveness in the digital economy.

The study matters because MSMEs are a critical pillar of Indonesia’s economy, contributing over 61% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employing around 97% of the workforce. As digital transformation accelerates globally, understanding how technologies like QRIS impact MSMEs is essential for economic growth, financial inclusion, and policy development.

Digital Transformation and MSMEs

Indonesia has been actively promoting digital payment systems to modernize its economy. QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard), launched by Bank Indonesia, allows businesses to accept payments from multiple digital platforms using a single QR code. This simplifies transactions and integrates various e-wallets and mobile banking services into one unified system.

Despite its advantages, QRIS adoption among MSMEs in Central Java remains relatively low. The study notes that only about 35% of MSMEs in the region have adopted QRIS, compared to the national average of 40%. This gap indicates ongoing challenges in digital adoption, including limited technological readiness and awareness among business owners.

How the Study Was Conducted

The research by Zakiya Miftahul Misbah and An’im Kafabih applies the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework to analyze the factors influencing QRIS adoption and its impact on MSME performance. The study uses a quantitative approach based on Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis.

Data were collected from 165 MSME owners in Central Java who had been using QRIS for at least six months. This approach allowed the researchers to examine both the drivers of adoption and the measurable outcomes for business performance.

Key Findings

The study presents clear evidence that adopting QRIS positively and significantly improves MSME performance. Businesses that use QRIS report increased efficiency, better financial management, and higher customer satisfaction.

Key findings include:

1. Net benefit is the strongest driver of adoption
MSMEs adopt QRIS primarily because it saves time, reduces operational costs, and simplifies transactions.
2. Top management support matters
Business owners who actively support digital innovation are more likely to implement QRIS successfully.
3. Entrepreneurial orientation encourages adoption
MSMEs with a strong willingness to innovate are more open to using digital payment systems.
4. Organizational readiness is essential
Financial preparedness and access to basic technology infrastructure play a key role.
5. Social influence affects decisions
Recommendations from peers, family, and business networks encourage adoption.
6. Government support accelerates usage
Training programs and policy support help MSMEs transition to digital systems.

However, not all factors showed significant influence. The study found that:

  • Compatibility with existing systems did not significantly affect adoption, likely due to limited digital literacy.
  • Competitive pressure was also not a strong factor, as QRIS adoption is still in an early stage in the region.

Real-World Impact on MSMEs

The adoption of QRIS delivers tangible benefits for MSMEs in Central Java. Businesses experience:

  • Increased sales and revenue
  • Faster transaction processing
  • Reduced cash handling risks
  • Improved financial record-keeping
  • Greater customer convenience

These improvements contribute to stronger overall business performance and long-term sustainability. QRIS also enables MSMEs to reach broader markets, including digitally connected consumers beyond their immediate geographic area.

In addition, the study highlights that QRIS aligns with Islamic economic principles, particularly in ensuring transparency and safeguarding financial transactions. Every transaction is recorded and traceable, reducing disputes and enhancing trust between businesses and customers.

Expert Insight

Zakiya Miftahul Misbah of Diponegoro University emphasizes that the benefits of QRIS go beyond convenience. According to her, MSMEs adopt QRIS because it “provides efficiency in time, energy, and costs while increasing transaction volume and business effectiveness.”

Her co-author, An’im Kafabih, also from Diponegoro University, highlights the importance of ecosystem support, noting that government initiatives and community influence play a critical role in encouraging digital adoption among MSMEs.

Implications for Policy and Business

The findings offer important insights for multiple stakeholders:

  • For MSMEs: Adopting QRIS can enhance operational efficiency and competitiveness in a digital marketplace.
  • For policymakers: Expanding digital literacy programs and infrastructure can accelerate adoption rates.
  • For financial institutions: Simplifying onboarding processes and providing incentives can increase usage.
  • For educators and researchers: The study provides a framework for analyzing digital transformation in small businesses.

The research also suggests that future studies should explore broader geographic areas beyond Central Java to capture regional differences in digital adoption.
