Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) programs together with strong work discipline significantly improve employee performance at PT Milion Limbah Ambon, according to a study conducted by Felix Chandra from Pattimura University. Published in 2026 in the International Journal of Management Analytics (IJMA), the research highlights how safe working conditions and employee compliance with operational standards play a critical role in maintaining productivity in high-risk industrial environments such as waste management.

The study explains that employee performance has become a major determinant of organizational sustainability in modern industries. In waste management companies such as PT Milion Limbah Ambon, maintaining consistent performance is particularly challenging because employees work in environments exposed to biological hazards, heavy equipment operations, and sanitation risks.

Researchers found that fluctuations in employee performance at the company are closely related to workplace environmental conditions. The accumulation of waste materials, inadequate sanitation management, and technical problems involving heavy equipment often disrupt work rhythms and reduce employee productivity. According to the study, improving workplace safety and maintaining discipline are therefore essential for ensuring operational efficiency.

The research defines Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) as a system designed to create safe physical and psychological working conditions through supervision, training, and workplace protection measures. In the context of PT Milion Limbah Ambon, OSH includes the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), hazard warning systems, proper lighting, air circulation, and sanitation facilities.

Work discipline was identified as another critical factor influencing employee performance. The study describes discipline as employee compliance with company regulations, attendance standards, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), especially in handling waste management operations and using safety equipment properly.

The research used a quantitative associative approach involving employees of PT Milion Limbah Ambon. Out of a total population of 149 employees, researchers selected 60 respondents using the Slovin formula and a simple random sampling method. Data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires and analyzed using multiple linear regression after validity, reliability, and classical assumption testing.

The findings showed that all research instruments met statistical validity and reliability standards. The Occupational Safety and Health variable obtained a Cronbach’s Alpha score of 0.945, work discipline scored 0.955, and employee performance scored 0.942, indicating high internal consistency across all measurement instruments.

The study also confirmed that the regression model met classical assumption requirements. Normality testing produced a significance value of 0.200, while multicollinearity testing showed tolerance values above 0.10 and Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) values below 10, indicating that the statistical model was suitable for regression analysis.

One of the main findings revealed that Occupational Safety and Health together with work discipline simultaneously have a significant effect on employee performance. The F-test produced an F-statistic value of 41.490 with a significance level of 0.000, confirming a strong collective relationship between workplace safety, employee discipline, and performance outcomes.

Partial analysis also demonstrated that each variable independently contributes to employee performance improvement:

  • Occupational Safety and Health produced a regression coefficient of 0.328 with a significance value of 0.002,
  • while work discipline showed a stronger coefficient of 0.364 with a significance value of 0.001.

Researchers concluded that work discipline had a slightly stronger influence on employee performance than OSH. Employees who consistently follow operational procedures, maintain punctuality, and comply with company regulations tend to achieve higher productivity and better work quality.

The study also found that safe workplace conditions contribute significantly to both physical and psychological employee well-being. Proper lighting, air circulation, and ergonomic work equipment reduce fatigue, minimize work-related risks, and help employees maintain focus and accuracy while performing their duties.

According to Felix Chandra, workplace safety and employee discipline should not be treated as separate management issues. Instead, both factors must be integrated to create a stable and productive working environment capable of reducing operational errors and strengthening organizational performance.

The study recommends that PT Milion Limbah Ambon conduct regular evaluations of workplace conditions, particularly air circulation and lighting systems, while strengthening monitoring mechanisms for employee discipline through transparent reward and punishment systems. Researchers also emphasize the importance of ensuring continuous availability and maintenance of PPE and technical facilities to minimize operational risks in the long term.

The findings are considered relevant for other high-risk industries seeking to improve employee performance through integrated workplace safety management and stronger organizational discipline systems.
