The Al-Khairaat Islamic Boarding School in Tatakalai Village, Banggai Regency, has been found to play a major role in improving educational quality, character development, and the religious life of the rural community. The findings were published in a study conducted by Nimim together with Sirajudin Muhamad, Iqra Djuman, Ramatia R. Nusi, Nur Afnisa Pakaya, and Yunmi Filnutqi Y.U Ma'in from Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk in the International Journal of Advanced Technology and Social Sciences (IJATSS) in 2026. The study is considered important because Tatakalai Village is a rural area with limited access to formal education. In this situation, the Al-Khairaat Islamic Boarding School has emerged not only as a religious institution but also as a center for academic development, social empowerment, and community education. The boarding school has helped bridge educational gaps while strengthening the spiritual values of the local community. The research team found that the educational system at Al-Khairaat Islamic Boarding School integrates religious and formal education. Students not only study the Qur’an, tajwid, fiqh, and classical Islamic texts, but also receive academic support that helps them succeed in formal schooling. This educational model is considered highly relevant to modern societal needs while preserving Islamic values and local cultural traditions.
The researchers used a descriptive qualitative method involving direct field observations, interviews with boarding school administrators and community members, and active researcher participation in pesantren activities. This approach provided a comprehensive understanding of the boarding school’s contribution to life in Tatakalai Village. The findings revealed that the learning process at Al-Khairaat Islamic Boarding School is conducted systematically and progressively through halaqah discussions, classroom learning, individual mentoring, and practical daily activities for students. The system has proven effective in building discipline, responsibility, and deeper religious understanding among students. In addition to strengthening academic and religious education, the boarding school also expands educational access for children from economically disadvantaged families. Affordable tuition fees and strong community support have made the institution an inclusive educational center accessible to various social groups. Researchers noted that this approach has helped increase educational participation in rural communities. The study also highlighted the boarding school’s major role in shaping the character of young people. Students are trained to perform religious duties with discipline, maintain proper etiquette, live modestly, and develop social responsibility. Character education is not only taught theoretically but practiced directly in the students’ daily lives within the boarding school environment.
According to the research team from Universitas Muhammadiyah Luwuk, the intensive interaction between caregivers and students is one of the key factors behind the success of this character education model. Values such as honesty, tolerance, social awareness, and religious moderation are instilled through direct role modeling. This approach is considered effective in shaping a religious generation that remains open to social diversity. The Al-Khairaat Islamic Boarding School also actively strengthens the religious life of the Tatakalai Village community. The institution regularly organizes Quranic studies, religious lectures, imam training programs, religious counseling, and discussions on tafsir and fiqh involving local residents. These activities help improve religious understanding while strengthening social relationships within the community. Beyond education and religion, the boarding school also contributes significantly to community social development. The study identified various social programs such as leadership training, student organizational development, community service activities, and local culture-based programs involving residents. These initiatives help strengthen social solidarity and improve young people’s social and leadership skills.
Collaboration between the boarding school and the village government has also strengthened community development based on religious and local cultural values. The boarding school serves as a strategic partner in implementing sustainable educational and social programs. With strong community participation, the pesantren has become a center for social transformation in Tatakalai Village. The researchers emphasized that the educational model implemented by Al-Khairaat Islamic Boarding School could become an example of community-based educational development for rural areas across Indonesia. The integration of religious education, formal learning, character building, and community empowerment is considered capable of creating a more harmonious, religious, and productive society. The findings also demonstrate that modern Islamic boarding schools are no longer limited to traditional religious education. Instead, they have evolved into centers for human resource development and social transformation. Islamic boarding schools can provide relevant educational solutions for areas with limited formal educational access. For communities and local governments, the study highlights how support for community-based educational institutions can significantly improve educational quality and social life in rural areas. Strong collaboration among boarding schools, formal schools, village governments, and local communities is considered a crucial factor in achieving sustainable educational development.
