Philosophy of Education Anchors
Learning Technology Development in the Digital Era. Research conducted by
Suyuti, Suyitno Muslim, Annis Kandriasari, and Wisbu Djatmiko from Jakarta
State University was published in the Journal of Educational Analytics (JEDA)
Vol. 5 No. 1 (2026).
The
research conducted by Suyuti, Suyitno Muslim, Annis Kandriasari, and Wisbu
Djatmiko revealed that the development of digital technology has transformed
the way we learn, teach, and interact in educational settings. However, without
a strong foundation in educational philosophy, the use of technology risks
shifting the fundamental purpose of education to mere technical efficiency.
Technology
Is Not Neutral
The
study emphasizes that learning technology is not merely a technical tool. It is
a cultural product that carries values and implications. Without philosophical
guidance, education may become mechanistic and overly focused on efficiency
rather than human development.
As discussed in the literature analysis (pp. 62–64), philosophy of education serves as a moral and intellectual compass, ensuring that digital innovation remains grounded in humanism, rationality, and morality
Technology,
the authors argue, should be used to:
- Strengthen
digital literacy
- Foster
critical thinking
- Build
ethical responsibility
- Support
character development
Rather
than simply accelerate content delivery.
Research
Method: Qualitative Literature Study
The
researchers adopted a qualitative approach using systematic literature review
techniques.
Data
sources included indexed national and international journal articles, academic
books, and policy documents published between 2020 and 2025. The analysis
employed qualitative content analysis to synthesize key philosophical concepts
related to learning technology.
This
method enabled the researchers to construct an integrated conceptual framework
connecting educational philosophy and digital learning innovation.
Four
Key Findings
1️⃣ Philosophy of Education as a Digital
Compass
The
findings confirm that philosophy of education remains highly relevant in the
era of digital transformation. It provides a normative framework that prevents
education from losing its value orientation amid technological acceleration
(pp. 65–66).
Without
philosophical reflection, technology use risks becoming shallow and
efficiency-driven.
2️⃣ Value-Based Technology Is More
Meaningful
Learning
technology developed on philosophical foundations differs significantly from
technocratic approaches.
Its
characteristics include:
- Student-centered
design
- Integration
of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor dimensions
- Reflective
and interactive engagement
- Adaptation
to socio-cultural contexts (pp. 66–67)
In
this framework, technology becomes a pedagogical instrument—not an end goal.
3️⃣ Digital Ethics as a Fundamental
Dimension
Issues
such as data privacy, information security, and responsible technology use are
central concerns.
The
study highlights that digital ethics must be embedded in both the design and
implementation of learning technologies (pp. 67–69)
Without
ethical grounding, digital education may lead to:
- Technology
dependency
- Privacy
violations
- Erosion
of meaningful social interaction
Philosophy
of education provides the normative structure to address these risks
systematically.
4️⃣ Impact on Quality and Sustainability
Integrating
educational philosophy into technology development significantly enhances the
quality of digital learning.
Learning
becomes:
- More
reflective
- More
meaningful
- Focused
on 21st-century competencies
- More
sustainable in the long term (pp. 69–70)
The
teacher’s role also shifts—from sole knowledge provider to facilitator and
value guide—while technology supports rather than replaces pedagogical
interaction.
Implications
for Policy and Practice
The
study offers several strategic recommendations:
🔹 Educational technology developers should integrate
philosophical values and digital ethics into platform design.
🔹 Policymakers must craft technology-based education
policies grounded in justice, inclusivity, and humanistic principles.
🔹 Educational institutions should incorporate philosophy
of education and digital ethics into teacher professional development (pp.
70–71)
Technology
built without educational values risks becoming obsolete or disconnected from
meaningful learning goals.
Academic
Contribution
This
research reinforces a critical insight: the success of digital learning depends
not only on technological sophistication but on the depth of philosophical
reflection underlying its development.
Far
from being outdated, philosophy of education is increasingly essential in
guiding digital transformation in education.
