The findings are especially relevant as Indonesia faces a growing aging population. National data shows that the proportion of elderly citizens continues to rise, reaching over 11% of the total population in recent years. This demographic shift brings new challenges, including declining physical health, social isolation, and reduced psychological well-being among older adults.
Despite these challenges, many community programs still focus only on physical health, such as exercise or medical check-ups. Spiritual and social support—key components of holistic well-being—are often overlooked. The study conducted by the STT Kharisma Bandung team addresses this gap by integrating both dimensions into a single community-based program.
The program was implemented in a church multipurpose hall in Arjasari and involved 12 elderly participants. Activities were held in the late afternoon, from 4:00 to 4:30 PM, allowing participants to join comfortably after completing their daily routines.
The approach was participatory and designed to be simple, practical, and adaptable. It combined three main components: light physical exercise, spiritual guidance, and group discussions. Each session began with elderly-friendly exercise routines focused on improving flexibility, balance, and muscle strength.
Following the exercise session, participants attended a pastoral care session led by the research team. These sessions provided emotional and spiritual support, encouraging participants to reflect on their lives, strengthen their faith, and maintain a positive outlook. The program concluded with interactive discussions where participants shared their experiences and feedback.
The methodology relied on direct observation and participant feedback to evaluate the program’s effectiveness. This straightforward approach ensured that the results reflected real experiences and measurable changes in participants’ well-being.
The study reports several key findings:
- Increased participation and engagement among elderly participants
- Improved physical fitness, including better mobility and balance
- Higher levels of enthusiasm, motivation, and self-confidence
- Greater awareness of the importance of holistic health
Participants consistently reported feeling healthier and more energized after joining the program. Many also highlighted the emotional and spiritual benefits, including a stronger sense of peace, purpose, and connection to others.
According to Ekky Oktapian and the research team from STT Kharisma Bandung, elderly well-being cannot be separated from spiritual and social dimensions. They emphasize that physical activity alone is not sufficient to address the complex challenges faced by aging populations.
The program also created a supportive social environment. Participants became more interactive, encouraging one another during exercise sessions and actively engaging in discussions. This social interaction helped reduce feelings of isolation and strengthened community bonds.
One of the most significant outcomes was the increased awareness among participants about holistic health. They began to understand that well-being includes not only physical fitness but also mental resilience, social connection, and spiritual fulfillment.
The implications of this study extend beyond the local community. The integrated model developed by the STT Kharisma Bandung researchers offers a practical framework that can be replicated in other regions. Community organizations, religious institutions, and local governments can adopt similar programs to support elderly populations more effectively.
In addition, the study provides valuable insights for policymakers addressing the challenges of an aging society. Programs that combine physical activity with emotional and spiritual support can contribute to healthier, more active, and more engaged elderly populations.
The researchers recommend expanding the program through regular implementation and additional components. Suggested improvements include more varied exercise routines, the introduction of basic fitness equipment, and collaboration with healthcare professionals to provide nutrition and health education.
“Elderly care should address physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions in an integrated way,” the authors explain, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive approach to aging.
With strong participation and positive feedback from the community, the program has the potential to become a sustainable model for elderly empowerment. Local church communities have already expressed interest in continuing the initiative on a regular basis.
