NU Leaders’ Public Communication Strengthens Democratic Values and Political Awareness, Study Finds

Research conducted by Agym Abdullah Nasruddin Amin and Ellys Lestari Pambayun from PTIQ University highlights how public communication by leaders of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) contributes to strengthening political awareness and democratic values in Indonesia. Published in 2025 in the journal Jurnal Multidisiplin Madani, the study analyzes how NU figures communicate ideas about nationalism, tolerance, and political participation to the public, particularly in Central Jakarta.

The research focuses on three influential NU public figures—Ulil Abshar Abdalla, Alissa Wahid, and Savic Ali—whose communication strategies combine Islamic ethical values with inclusive messaging. Their approach promotes political literacy while encouraging social cohesion in Indonesia’s diverse democratic society.

The findings show that ethical and inclusive communication from NU leaders plays a significant role in shaping political discourse and strengthening national unity. At the same time, the study notes that controversies surrounding public statements highlight the need for more strategic communication management within NU’s organizational structure.

Religion, Communication, and Democratic Life in Indonesia

Indonesia is home to the world’s largest Muslim population and one of the most vibrant democracies in Southeast Asia. In this context, religious organizations often influence public debate, social values, and political engagement.

Among these organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama stands out as the largest Islamic social organization in the country. Founded in 1926, NU has long promoted moderate Islam, pluralism, and national unity. Its leaders frequently participate in public discussions about politics, religion, and social issues.

In the digital era, public communication by religious figures has become even more influential. Messages delivered through social media, public forums, and online platforms can reach millions of people and shape public perception of political and social issues.

Because of this growing influence, understanding how NU leaders communicate political and social messages has become increasingly important for scholars, policymakers, and the broader public.

How the Research Was Conducted

The study by Agym Abdullah Nasruddin Amin and Ellys Lestari Pambayun used a qualitative case study approach to analyze the public communication of three NU figures.

Researchers collected data through several methods:

  • In-depth interviews with relevant sources
  • Direct observation of public discussions and communication activities
  • Document analysis of speeches, online content, and media publications

These methods allowed the researchers to examine how NU figures communicate political ideas, how audiences respond to these messages, and how communication strategies influence public understanding of national political issues.

The research focused on communication practices occurring in Central Jakarta, a major political and media center in Indonesia.

Key Findings: Ethical Communication Strengthens Political Awareness

The study identifies several important patterns in how NU figures communicate political and social messages to the public.

1. Emphasis on Islamic Ethical Values

The communication style of NU leaders consistently reflects core Islamic principles such as:

  • Wisdom (hikmah)
  • Justice (‘adl)
  • Tolerance (tasamuh)

These values help frame political discussions in a constructive and ethical way.

2. Promotion of Inclusive Nationalism

Public statements by Ulil Abshar Abdalla, Alissa Wahid, and Savic Ali frequently emphasize the importance of Indonesian unity and pluralism.

Their communication encourages citizens to view democracy and national identity as compatible with Islamic teachings.

3. Political Literacy Through Public Dialogue

NU leaders actively use:

  • Public forums
  • Social media platforms
  • Online discussions

These channels allow them to explain political issues in accessible language, helping the public understand complex political developments.

4. Challenges and Controversies

The research also notes that some public statements by NU figures have sparked controversy or debate. These situations highlight the importance of strategic communication planning within large religious organizations.

Why These Findings Matter

The research underscores the important role of religious leaders in shaping democratic culture in Indonesia.

Public communication by respected religious figures can:

  • Encourage responsible political participation
  • Promote moderate and tolerant discourse
  • Reduce social polarization
  • Strengthen national integration

In an era where misinformation and political polarization spread rapidly through digital media, credible voices from respected organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama can help maintain constructive public dialogue.

According to Ellys Lestari Pambayun of PTIQ University, the communication style of NU leaders demonstrates how religious values can support democratic engagement rather than conflict with it.

The research indicates that inclusive communication grounded in ethical principles helps build public trust while encouraging citizens to participate responsibly in political life.

Implications for Policy, Media, and Society

The findings offer several practical insights for policymakers, communication experts, and religious organizations.

For religious institutions:
Strategic communication training can help leaders deliver messages more effectively and reduce misunderstandings in public discourse.

For policymakers:
Collaboration with moderate religious organizations can strengthen programs promoting social cohesion and democratic participation.

For media organizations:
Understanding the communication strategies of influential religious leaders can improve reporting on religion and politics.

For educators and researchers:
The study highlights the importance of media literacy and political education in strengthening democratic societies.
