Car Free Day Spatial Market Access and Moonlighting in Mitigating Coastal Household Financial Vulnerability

Car Free Day (CFD) events prove to be more than just urban recreational spaces, serving as vital economic catalysts that effectively suppress financial vulnerability among traditional coastal fishing households. A recent study conducted by Tri Yoga Sujatmiko, Tri Frida Suryati, Ratna, Supriadi, and Muh Ridwan Hayadin from Universitas Muhammadiyah Mamuju reveals how rent-free public space access and job diversification directly impact the economic resilience of coastal communities in Mamuju, West Sulawesi. Conducted in 2026, this research emphasizes the importance of public space intervention as an economic buffer amidst seasonal lean periods.

Seasonal Economic Challenges and Coastal Debt Traps

The marine and fisheries sector represents the primary economic pillar in Mamuju Regency, supporting tens of thousands of traditional fishermen. However, coastal settlements such as Simboro and Rangas Villages frequently face high poverty rates and financial vulnerability driven by extreme weather shocks. During the west monsoon season in the Makassar Strait, high waves force small-scale fishermen using lopi-lopi boats to halt fishing operations for months, plunging their daily catch revenues to zero. This condition is exacerbated by limited access to formal financing, trapping fishermen in informal patron-client (ponggawa) relationships burdened by high-cost debt.

Quantitative Multiple Regression Methodology

This study employs an associative quantitative design involving 80 respondents consisting of coastal micro-entrepreneurs, fishermen's wives, and Civil Servant (ASN) family units actively trading along the Manakarra Arteri Highway corridor. Data collection utilized a structured 5-point Likert scale questionnaire to measure variables including CFD income, zero-rent spatial access, job diversification (moonlighting), and financial vulnerability mitigation. The collected data was analyzed using multiple linear regression after satisfying a series of classical assumption tests.

Key Findings: The Central Role of Rent-Free Public Space Access

Statistical analysis indicates that the regression model collectively explains 56.2% of the variance in coastal household financial vulnerability mitigation ($F = 32.472, p < 0.001$). The partial findings of this study include:

  • Zero-Rent Spatial Access: This variable exerts the largest positive impact on reducing financial vulnerability ($t = 5.912, p < 0.001$), where the elimination of commercial shop rental fees drastically boosts net profit margins for micro-entrepreneurs.
  • Car Free Day Income: Income generated from this weekly activity proved significant ($t = 5.216, p < 0.001$) in strengthening household liquidity and assisting emergency savings accumulation.
  • Job Diversification (Moonlighting): The involvement of ASN family units and coastal household members in secondary jobs also provides a significant positive effect ($t = 4.384, p < 0.001$) to cushion economic pressures caused by declining fish catch revenues.

Policy Implications and Strengthening Social Safety Nets

Incremental spatial incubation through public road infrastructure utilization functions optimally as an economic safety valve. Tri Yoga Sujatmiko and fellow researchers from Universitas Muhammadiyah Mamuju emphasize that local governments need to institutionalize sustainable weekend rent-free market access policies. This step not only helps coastal households break free from middleman (ponggawa) debt bondage, but also builds long-term economic resilience against seasonal climate shocks.
