Sophia Rahmi, Nur Azizah, and Nisa Rohmawati from Politeknik Pajajaran Insan Cinta Bangsa (ICB) Bandung examined learning strategies that can respond to these changes through digital literacy, critical thinking, creativity, communication, and ethical AI use. The study views digital transformation as more than simply a change in learning media. The presence of digital platforms, social media, multimedia materials, collaborative documents, and generative AI is also changing how learners obtain information, compose written work, communicate, and produce creative outputs.

In Indonesian language learning, these developments create opportunities for more contextual learning activities. Students can read various online sources, participate in discussions through digital platforms, write collaboratively, create podcasts or videos, and publish their work for wider audiences.

However, the growing amount of digital information also creates new challenges. Not all information available on the internet has the same level of accuracy, credibility, language quality, or clarity of authorship. This situation makes the ability to read, evaluate, and assess information increasingly important.

AI Is Not a Replacement for Language Reasoning

One of the most significant changes in Indonesian language learning is the emergence of generative AI. This technology can assist users with various language-related tasks, including generating ideas, developing writing outlines, suggesting alternative sentences, summarizing information, and supporting editing processes.

Rahmi, Azizah, and Rohmawati position AI as a support tool for learning, rather than a replacement for human reasoning. Learners still need to verify information generated by AI, compare it with reliable sources, understand the context, and determine whether the language and content are appropriate.

This approach is also closely connected to ethical considerations. The use of AI in academic assignments needs to take into account authorship, source attribution, privacy, information bias, and academic integrity.

Therefore, AI should not only be used as a tool for producing answers. It can also become an object of critical literacy learning. For example, students can be asked to analyze AI-generated texts, identify factual errors, compare the texts with other sources, revise them, and explain the reasons behind their revisions.

Digital Literacy Becomes Part of Language Learning

The study also highlights that digital literacy should not be understood merely as the ability to operate applications. Digital literacy includes the ability to search for information, evaluate sources, understand digital messages, create content, communicate responsibly, and consider ethical aspects.

This concept can be directly integrated into the four major language skills.

In reading, students can compare two online articles and evaluate the credibility of their sources. In writing, they can create a draft, use AI to obtain feedback, verify information, revise the text, and provide appropriate citations. In speaking, students can create podcasts, presentations, or educational videos. Meanwhile, in listening, they can analyze information from podcasts, interviews, and videos.

This approach allows digital literacy to become integrated into language activities rather than being treated as a separate learning topic.

Project-Based Learning Encourages More Contextualized Work

Another strategy highlighted in the article is Project-Based Learning (PjBL). This model allows students to develop language skills by creating products that have real purposes and audiences.

Learning products can include popular science articles, digital magazines, podcasts, short videos, information campaigns, presentations, and reviews. The process involves information gathering, planning, writing, production, feedback, revision, and presentation.

This approach means that Indonesian language learning does not stop at mastering theories or evaluating final products. Students’ thinking processes can also be observed through writing outlines, source evaluations, drafts, revision notes, reflections, oral explanations, and citation practices.

For educators, this type of assessment is becoming increasingly relevant as AI can produce texts within a short period. Assessing the learning process can provide a clearer picture of how well students understand information and make decisions about the texts they produce.

Four Principles of Indonesian Language Learning in the AI Era

Based on a synthesis of the literature, Rahmi, Azizah, and Rohmawati propose four main principles for contemporary Indonesian language learning.

First, contextuality. Learning should connect language skills with real communication situations.

Second, critical thinking. Students need to be able to evaluate digital information and AI-generated outputs before using them.

Third, creativity. Technology can be utilized to produce meaningful multimodal works.

Fourth, responsibility. Technology use should consider authorship, privacy, citation, bias, and academic integrity.

These four principles position technology as a supporting tool for learning. Human abilities to understand context, interpret meaning, consider the cultural and linguistic nuances of Indonesian, and make communication decisions remain essential.

Implications for Education

The findings of this study suggest that transforming Indonesian language learning cannot be achieved simply by introducing digital devices or AI into the classroom. A more important change lies in the design of learning activities and assessment systems.

Teachers and lecturers can design assignments that require students to compare information, examine AI-generated outputs, explain their revision processes, and take responsibility for the sources they use. Through this approach, technology becomes part of the learning process while also serving as a means of developing critical thinking skills.

Nevertheless, the article is a literature-based study, meaning that the proposed framework has not yet been directly tested in specific classrooms or educational institutions. The authors recommend further research through classroom action research, quasi-experimental studies, design-based research, or mixed-method approaches to examine how the framework can be implemented and evaluated.
