Effective principal leadership and high teacher morale are proven to be crucial factors in enhancing the quality of teaching among teachers at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) in Batang Toru District, Tapanuli. These findings were presented by Masnilam Hasibuan from the International Golden Institute, Indonesia, in a study conducted to examine the dynamics within this secondary education environment.

Teacher quality is a primary pillar in achieving national education goals. However, teacher professionalism and performance in schools often face various obstacles. Therefore, it is important to understand how the principal’s role in motivating teachers, as well as the teachers' own work spirit, impacts the quality of instruction in the classroom.

In this study, data were collected via surveys through the distribution of questionnaires to MTs teachers. Data analysis was conducted using statistical correlation and regression techniques to measure the extent to which leadership and work spirit variables influence teaching quality, both individually and simultaneously.

The study highlights several key findings:

  • Principal leadership, which includes aspects of charisma, motivation, quality, and sympathy, has a positive impact on teacher work morale.
  • High teacher morale contributes significantly to improving professionalism and teaching quality.
  • Leadership and teacher work spirit simultaneously contribute 19% toward the improvement of teacher quality, while the remaining 81% is influenced by other factors such as personal competence, commitment, compensation, and school policy.

The implications of this research are highly significant for education policy. Masnilam Hasibuan emphasizes that to improve teacher quality, principals need to strengthen a more supportive leadership style, particularly in providing challenging motivation and paying attention to teacher aspirations. Furthermore, building a work culture characterized by discipline, honesty, and loyalty is essential to creating a conducive educational environment. With a good understanding of their roles and responsibilities, teachers are expected to deliver their best performance in the teaching and learning process.
