FORMOSA NEWS - Medan - Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the future of pharmaceutical innovation by accelerating drug discovery, improving precision medicine, and supporting more sustainable healthcare systems. These findings are presented in a 2026 study by Junius Gian Ginting of Universitas Senior Medan, published in the Formosa Journal of Multidisciplinary Research (FJMR). The review concludes that AI has evolved from a supporting digital tool into a strategic technology capable of transforming every stage of modern drug development while reducing costs and improving patient outcomes.

The findings arrive at a time when healthcare systems worldwide are facing increasing pressure to develop new medicines more quickly and affordably. Conventional drug development typically requires 10 to 15 years of research, billions of dollars in investment, and still faces a high failure rate during clinical trials. As diseases become more complex and demand for personalized treatments continues to grow, pharmaceutical companies are increasingly looking toward AI to improve efficiency and innovation.

AI Becomes a Strategic Technology for Drug Discovery

The study reviewed recent international evidence on how Artificial Intelligence is being integrated into pharmaceutical research and precision medicine. Rather than conducting laboratory experiments, Junius Gian Ginting synthesized published scientific evidence to identify the most significant trends, benefits, and challenges surrounding AI-driven drug development.

Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on the PRISMA 2020 framework, the research examined literature from major scientific databases including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, IEEE Xplore, and Google Scholar. From an initial collection of 152 scientific articles, only 10 peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2025 met the review criteria and were included in the final analysis. The selected studies were analyzed through thematic synthesis to identify recurring patterns in AI applications across pharmaceutical development.

Five Major Contributions of Artificial Intelligence

The review identified five interconnected themes demonstrating how AI is transforming modern precision drug development.

1. Faster Drug Discovery

Machine learning and deep learning algorithms enable researchers to identify biological targets, screen millions of chemical compounds, predict toxicity, and evaluate drug effectiveness significantly faster than conventional laboratory methods.

Instead of relying primarily on trial-and-error experimentation, researchers can use predictive AI models to prioritize the most promising drug candidates before entering expensive clinical testing.

2. Supporting Precision Medicine

AI strengthens personalized healthcare by integrating genomic, proteomic, metabolomic, and clinical patient data.

This multidimensional analysis allows physicians and researchers to design treatments tailored to each patient's biological characteristics, increasing therapeutic effectiveness while reducing adverse side effects.

3. Improving Sustainability

The review found that AI contributes to sustainable pharmaceutical innovation by reducing repetitive laboratory experiments, minimizing animal testing, optimizing research resources, and improving manufacturing efficiency.

Predictive simulations allow many early-stage evaluations to be performed digitally before physical experiments begin, helping reduce costs, material waste, and energy consumption.

4. Accelerating Innovation Through Generative AI

Among the most significant technological developments highlighted in the review is Generative AI.

Unlike traditional AI systems that mainly analyze existing data, generative AI can design entirely new molecular structures with potential therapeutic properties. This capability expands the search for innovative medicines and increases the likelihood of identifying successful drug candidates more rapidly.

5. Enhancing Decision-Making

AI is increasingly used to improve diagnosis, optimize clinical trials, strengthen pharmaceutical manufacturing, and support quality control.

Collectively, these applications help pharmaceutical companies produce safer medicines more efficiently while supporting patient-centered healthcare delivery.

Important Challenges Remain

Despite its significant advantages, the study emphasizes that several barriers continue to limit widespread AI adoption within pharmaceutical development.

Among the most critical challenges are:

  • Limited quality and interoperability of biomedical data.
  • Algorithmic bias that may affect prediction accuracy.
  • Limited transparency of complex AI models.
  • Ethical concerns regarding patient privacy and data security.
  • Regulatory uncertainty surrounding AI-assisted pharmaceutical research.

The review highlights the growing importance of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), which seeks to make AI decisions more transparent and understandable for researchers, clinicians, regulators, and patients.

According to the reviewed evidence, technological innovation alone is insufficient. Successful implementation will also require robust governance, ethical standards, and regulatory frameworks that keep pace with rapidly advancing AI technologies.

Implications for Healthcare and Industry

The findings suggest that Artificial Intelligence could substantially reshape pharmaceutical innovation over the coming years.

Potential real-world benefits include:

  • Faster development of new medicines.
  • Lower pharmaceutical research and development costs.
  • More personalized and effective patient treatments.
  • Improved efficiency in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Reduced environmental impact through optimized resource use.
  • Better evidence for policymakers developing AI governance in healthcare.

For pharmaceutical companies, AI offers opportunities to improve productivity and accelerate innovation. For healthcare providers, AI supports more precise clinical decision-making. For governments and regulators, the findings reinforce the need to establish ethical and transparent AI policies that encourage innovation while protecting public safety.

Perspective from the Author

Based on the evidence synthesized in the review, Junius Gian Ginting of Universitas Senior Medan concludes that Artificial Intelligence has become a strategic enabler for sustainable, efficient, and patient-centered pharmaceutical development. However, realizing its full potential requires balancing technological advancement with improvements in data quality, transparency, ethical governance, and regulatory compliance.
