Reading comprehension is the fundamental foundation for student academic success in elementary school. However, low interest and limited reading skills remain significant challenges in many regions. Research conducted by Nur Ilmi, Miftahul Jannah, and Ashaoliya from Universitas Negeri Makassar in May 2026 demonstrates that the implementation of the SQ4R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Reflect, Review) learning model, combined with comic media, significantly improves reading learning outcomes for students at UPT SD Negeri 7 Benteng.
Overcoming Low Reading Comprehension
Students often struggle to grasp the core essence of a text because the teaching methods employed tend to be passive and unengaging. The use of monotonous textbook passages frequently fails to spark imagination or motivate students to dig deeper for information. Without the right approach, students' reading skills remain at a basic level. The use of comic media serves as a visual solution to make the learning process more enjoyable and informative, helping students better understand narrative structures and information within texts.
Classroom Action Research Methodology
The researchers employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method with a qualitative approach to directly improve the learning process. The research was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through observation, achievement tests, and documentation. The primary focus of this study was to examine how the SQ4R model systematically guides students through reading, while comic media serves as an assistive tool to visualize narratives, making them easier to absorb for fourth-grade students.
Key Findings: The Effectiveness of SQ4R and Comics
The research results indicate consistent improvement across the two learning cycles:
- Category Improvement: In the first cycle, the learning process and outcomes were categorized as "sufficient." After implementing improvements in the second cycle, both aspects showed significant growth, reaching the "good" category.
- Structured Thinking: The SQ4R model helped students approach texts more structurally—beginning with a preliminary survey and concluding with a review of the material learned.
- Student Engagement: Comic media proved highly effective in triggering student enthusiasm, encouraging them to become more actively involved in discussions and content analysis.
Impact on Elementary Education
These findings provide practical contributions to elementary education, particularly in addressing literacy barriers. According to the research team from Universitas Negeri Makassar, the combination of a structured method and engaging media is key to enhancing literacy quality. For elementary school teachers, this model offers a practical, easy-to-apply strategy for creating an interactive classroom atmosphere. With this approach, reading skills are no longer viewed as a burden, but as an activity that students enjoy and master.
