Interactive "KuPin" Chatbot Successfully Boosts Elementary Student Motivation in IPAS Learning

Ilusstration by AI

Educational technology innovation through an artificial intelligence (AI)-based chatbot application called "KuPin" (Kucing Pintar) has proven effective in increasing elementary school students' motivation in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) subjects. Research conducted by Tia Latifatu Sadiah, Maman Fathurrohman, and Suroso Mukti Leksono from Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University demonstrates that this interactive media is capable of transforming the classroom atmosphere into a more lively and participatory environment.

Addressing Challenges of Abstract Learning

IPAS learning at the elementary level often faces obstacles because the material is considered too abstract or difficult for students to visualize. Reliance on textbooks and one-way lecture methods often causes students to feel bored, passive, and lose interest in learning. This gap between a curriculum that demands active participation and the limitations of classroom reality is what drives the need for learning media that is more relevant to the digital era.

Research Methodology

This study applied the Research and Development (R&D) model using the ADDIE approach, which consists of five systematic stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The KuPin media was designed as a virtual learning assistant featuring a friendly cat character, allowing students to ask questions, receive instant feedback, and explore IPAS topics through an interactive conversational interface.

Key Findings

The use of the KuPin chatbot demonstrates significant results in transforming the teaching and learning process:

  • ·         Increased Motivation: Student learning motivation scores increased significantly after using KuPin compared to using conventional textbook methods.
  • ·         Active Engagement: Students showed high levels of curiosity and better persistence when facing tasks through this interactive media.
  • ·         Pedagogical Effectiveness: KuPin successfully created a personalized learning environment where students could learn at their own pace (self-paced learning).
  • ·         Learning Satisfaction: Automated scoring features and immediate feedback provided satisfaction and self-confidence for students upon successfully completing challenges.

Implications for Future Education

This research proves that technology is not merely an auxiliary tool, but a bridge connecting lesson material with the real world. By integrating media like KuPin, educators can create enjoyable learning experiences (joyful learning) without pressuring students with rote memorization. This approach supports the development of a generation that is digitally literate, creative, and possesses a lifelong passion for learning.
