Monopoly-Based Learning Media Proven Effective in Improving High School Economics Achievement

The use of Monopoly-based learning media has been proven to significantly improve students’ achievement in economics subjects. This finding comes from a study conducted by Rika Wahyuni, Elva Susanti, and Yulhendri from Universitas Negeri Padang in 2026, published in the International Journal of Advanced Technology and Social Sciences (IJATSS). The study offers a practical solution to address the long-standing challenge of students’ difficulty in understanding abstract economic concepts. Low learning outcomes in economics remain a common issue in many Indonesian high schools. Teacher-centered instruction with limited interaction often makes it difficult for students to grasp concepts in depth. As a result, motivation declines and many students fail to meet the expected competency standards. This condition was also observed at SMA Negeri 1 Pariaman, where the study was conducted. Prior to the implementation of innovative learning media, many students recorded low scores in economics. Classroom observations also showed that students tended to be passive and less engaged during lessons.

Interactive Learning Through Gameplay

To address this issue, the research team developed a modified Monopoly-based learning medium tailored to economics content. The game incorporates key economic concepts such as markets, transactions, production, and decision-making into its gameplay. Students actively participate in simulated economic activities, including buying and selling assets, managing finances, and making strategic decisions. This approach enables students to not only learn theory but also experience its application in real-life-like situations. The media is designed to encourage active participation, collaboration, and critical thinking among students.

Research Method: Experimental Approach
The study applied a quasi-experimental design by comparing two groups of students: an experimental class using Monopoly-based learning media and a control class using conventional teaching methods.
Data were collected through:
* Pretest and posttest assessments
* Classroom observations
* Student response questionnaires
The collected data were analyzed statistically to determine the effectiveness of the learning media.

Key Findings: Significant Improvement
The results show that the Monopoly-based learning media had a positive and significant impact on student learning outcomes.
Key findings include:
* Significant increase in student scores
    Students in the experimental class achieved higher posttest scores than those in the control class.
* Improved student engagement
    Students became more active and participated more during lessons.
* Higher learning motivation
    The enjoyable learning environment increased student enthusiasm.
* Better conceptual understanding
    Students found it easier to understand and retain economic concepts through experiential learning.
According to Rika Wahyuni from Universitas Negeri Padang, game-based learning creates a more meaningful learning experience, where students become active participants rather than passive recipients of information.

Impact on Education
The study confirms that innovation in learning media plays a crucial role in improving education quality. Game-based learning is particularly effective in:
* Enhancing student achievement
* Increasing classroom participation
* Developing critical thinking skills
* Creating an engaging learning atmosphere
This approach aligns with 21st-century learning principles that emphasize creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Policy Implications
The findings provide important recommendations:
* For teachers: adopt interactive learning media to improve teaching effectiveness
* For schools: support innovation in classroom practices
* For policymakers: encourage creative teaching methods within the national curriculum
With proper support, game-based learning media can become a key strategy to improve education quality in Indonesia.
