Interactive e-books are becoming an effective digital learning tool for improving English grammar mastery among university students, according to a study conducted by Melda V. R. Munthe, David T. Hutahaean, and Leonita E. Manihuruk from Universitas HKBP Nommensen Pematangsiantar. Published in 2026 in the International Journal of Education and Life Sciences (IJELS), the study found that students who used interactive e-books achieved significantly higher grammar learning outcomes compared to students who relied on conventional textbooks.

The research was conducted to address long-standing challenges in grammar instruction for English Department students. Traditional grammar materials were considered too static, text-heavy, and less engaging, making it difficult for students to maintain motivation and improve language accuracy. Researchers noted that many students require repetitive practice, personalized feedback, and flexible learning resources that printed textbooks cannot fully provide.

To solve this problem, the researchers developed an interactive digital grammar e-book specifically designed for students at NHU. The e-book integrates multimedia features such as videos, clickable explanations, quizzes, self-assessment tools, instant feedback, animations, and interactive exercises. The platform was designed to support independent learning while making grammar lessons more engaging and accessible both inside and outside the classroom.

The study used a Research and Development (R&D) method based on the ADDIE model, which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. Researchers involved 60 first-semester students selected through purposive sampling over one academic semester. Data were collected through tests, interviews, and questionnaires, then analyzed using SPSS statistical software.

The interactive e-book included several learning components, such as:

  • grammar explanations and summaries,
  • instructional videos,
  • concept maps,
  • assignments and worksheets,
  • evaluation questions,
  • glossaries and indexes,
  • and automatic navigation features for easier learning access.

According to the study, expert validators and students gave the e-book high scores in terms of content quality, language clarity, and presentation. The overall validation score reached 4.28 out of 5, indicating that the e-book was considered highly feasible and did not require major revision before implementation.

The most significant finding emerged from the effectiveness test. Statistical analysis showed a major improvement in grammar learning outcomes among students using the interactive e-book. The experimental group achieved a significantly higher score than the control group using printed textbooks, with a t-test result of 11.881 and a significance value below 0.05.

The gain score analysis also showed stronger learning improvement among students using the digital platform:

  • one experimental class recorded a 70% improvement,
  • while another achieved a 71% increase in grammar learning outcomes,
  • both categorized as high learning gains compared to traditional learning methods.

The researchers concluded that interactive e-books not only improve grammar mastery but also increase student engagement, motivation, and independent learning habits. Multimedia-based learning materials were found to make grammar lessons more practical, enjoyable, and adaptable to different student learning styles.

The findings are considered important for higher education institutions adapting to digital learning environments. The study suggests that interactive e-books can become an innovative alternative to conventional textbooks, especially in language learning programs that require continuous practice and immediate feedback.
