Digital Finance Research Surges Globally, Shifting Toward Economic Growth Impact

A new study by Retnoning Ambarwati, Muhammad Sultan, and Darsono from Universitas Tunas Pembangunan (UTP) Surakarta, published in 2026, maps the rapid global expansion of digital finance and supply chain finance research. Drawing on 3,936 scientific publications from 2021 to 2025, the study reveals a sharp rise in academic output and a growing focus on how digital finance influences economic growth. The findings matter because digital finance is increasingly shaping global financial systems, business operations, and policy decisions.

Digital Finance Becomes Central to Modern Economy

Digital finance has evolved into a core component of the global financial system. It includes online banking, electronic payments, fintech platforms, and emerging technologies such as decentralized finance and digital currencies. These tools are transforming how money flows across economies and supply chains.

In supply chain finance, digital tools improve payment speed, transparency, and efficiency among businesses. This integration is especially relevant as industries seek faster and more reliable financial systems in a post-pandemic digital economy.

Despite rapid adoption, challenges remain. These include cybersecurity risks, unequal digital access, and regulatory gaps. Understanding how research in this field is evolving helps policymakers, businesses, and researchers respond to these challenges more effectively.

Mapping Global Research with Big Data

The UTP Surakarta team analyzed thousands of academic articles indexed in the Dimensions database. They used bibliometric analysis, a method that examines publication trends, citations, and collaboration networks.

The approach combined:

  • Performance analysis to track publication growth
  • Science mapping to identify key themes and collaborations
  • Network analysis to examine relationships between authors, countries, and institutions

The dataset included peer-reviewed articles and reviews published in English between 2021 and 2025. Advanced tools such as VOSviewer and Biblioshiny were used to visualize patterns and trends.

Key Findings: Rapid Growth and Shifting Focus

The study identifies several major trends shaping the future of digital finance research:

1. Explosive Growth in Publications

  • Research output increased more than sevenfold in five years
  • Around 200 articles were published in 2021, rising to nearly 1,500 in 2025
  • The sharpest growth occurred in 2024–2025

This pattern signals that digital finance is entering a phase of rapid expansion and early consolidation as a scientific field.

2. Fragmented but Expanding Collaboration

  • Research communities are still divided into small clusters
  • Collaboration across institutions and countries remains limited
  • No single global research network dominates yet

This fragmentation suggests opportunities for stronger international partnerships.

3. China Leads Global Research Production

  • China dominates both in publication volume and collaboration networks
  • Strong connections exist with the United States, United Kingdom, and several developing countries, including Indonesia
  • Chinese universities form the core of institutional research networks

This highlights a shift in the global center of knowledge production toward Asia.

4. Core Themes Focus on Integration and Analysis

  • The most common research topics include finance, integration, and analysis
  • Studies often examine how digital systems integrate with financial operations

These themes reflect a focus on building and understanding digital financial systems.

5. Emerging Focus on Economic Growth

  • “Growth” has emerged as a key new research theme
  • Recent studies increasingly examine the macroeconomic impact of digital finance

This marks a transition from studying technology adoption to evaluating real-world economic outcomes.

Real-World Implications for Policy and Industry

The findings carry significant implications across sectors:

  • Policymakers can use this research to design regulations that balance innovation with financial stability
  • Businesses can adopt digital finance tools to improve efficiency and competitiveness
  • Developing countries can leverage digital finance to expand financial inclusion and economic growth
  • Researchers can explore emerging topics such as sustainability, cybersecurity, and blockchain integration

The study shows that digital finance is no longer just a technological innovation. It is a driver of economic transformation, influencing how businesses operate and how economies grow.

Expert Insight from the Authors

Retnoning Ambarwati of Universitas Tunas Pembangunan explains that the research frontier is evolving rapidly. She notes that digital finance research is “moving from system integration toward evaluating its broader impact on economic growth and financial stability.”

This shift reflects a deeper understanding of digital finance as not only a tool for efficiency but also a key factor in economic development.

A Field Entering Its Next Phase

The study concludes that digital finance and supply chain finance research is entering an early consolidation phase. The field is becoming more structured, with clearer themes and growing global interest.

However, gaps remain. Collaboration is still limited, and research is concentrated in specific regions. Expanding global cooperation and exploring new subtopics will be essential for future progress.
